The wait is KILLING me
My fiancée is just about due to give birth, and could go into labout pretty much anytime, but the wait is killing me.

Stubborn kid doesn' want to come out or what?

Argh!

:freak:

27. Good luck with that
I was a week late with the first. The doc said "We can wait another week or we can induce tomorrow."
By that point, I would have bribed him for that induction.

My first was big so they induced the second early. But by that time I had learned patience. ;)

Well, here's a comforting thought. This is the last time any of this will be about YOU.

Congratulations, good luck, have a great time, use a firm hand to burp the baby after every feeding and WAIT for the burp, it WILL happen!

Labor and delivery is a gas! Enjoy it!

8. To be fair, she _wants_ to be induced after her date
I've known many women who were induced, and aside from stronger contractions, they were fine, so I'm hoping it will be the same.

13. There is an intermediate procedure called "stripping the membranes."
With my second late baby, my midwife, well, basically poked around to get things rolling. A little painful, but not too bad. It started contractions and I gave birth less than 24 hours later.

26. same here!
but if she does go the induction route, she should be prepared for a much harder, more intense labor much earlier than if she goes naturally. Induction is a rough time. and stay away from Cytotec, Google it if that's the Dr's preferred method of induction.

(early congrats too, and wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy labor and birth!)

was born on the due date. I guess that's pretty uncommon. It was on my planner and by God that's when he arrived.
;)(I was scaring people since I was at work about 5 days earlier)

I was scheduled to be induced the following week, but fortunately he came as planned. Well, they did have to go in after him with the big forceps, since he didn't want to come out. Better to avoid induction, I've heard some unpleasant stories.

I thought my second would come earlier, but Nooooooooo. She was stubborn even in utero.

I was actually kind of happy my son was late because it made his birthday farther from the major holidays.

Also, better late than early! I've known some scary preemie situations -- wow, that is stressful.

Okay first off even if you aren't squeamish when the bloody flow starts you might want to do yourself a favor and STARE AT IT. Embrace it because it ain't gonna get any prettier.

My wife eventually had a C-section (8 months ago) but trust me it was pretty nasty aside from the beauty of it.

Be ready to go get her stuff to eat. I highly recommend breakfast foods.

Good luck.

23. have sex!
prostoglandins from semen can help ripen the cervix, and female orgasm is similar to contractions- can help bring on labor. Of course, you should check with your health care provider first- if there are any reasons she cannot have sex then you shouldn't. (one could be that her water has already broken but is not yet in labor)

seriously- the surprise of it all, the fun and excitement, could be just what she needs! Think about it, it may be the last time you two are really alone for a LONG time! Take advantage and give her some attention ;-) Rest afterwards, and then take a walk- walking also helps move things along in the early stages of labor- you could be parents tomorrow, spend some quality time together! have fun, this is one of the most common human events, but it is unique and special for you two- revel in it!

remember always that these are the last days you will share as just a couple. After she gives birth, you both get new names (mom and dad) new responsibilities, new schedules, new priorities, new everything- Enjoy each other as a couple, it's a really special time. Shower her with affection and appreciation for all the hard work she has put into this pregnancy and let her know that she is the sexiest, most gorgeous woman on the planet TODAY, pregnant as all get out.

your whole life is about to change! whoa. :-) Have fun with it, celebrate!

as hell to have an orgasm in the last stages. They were horny! it can be uncomfortable at first, but all of them said once the ball was rolling, it was the best of their lives. Lots of crazy hormones rolling around in there and very intense.

and yes- it does work! (sometimes it doesn't, but sometimes it does, and what do you have to lose?)

43. You've figured out one of the secrets of parenthood already
Never -- and I mean never -- expect anything to go easy or as planned from now on. :D

The waiting is horrible, but you can do a few things to make the time pass. Why not go home tonight and make her a nice bath, wash her hair for her, dry her off with towels and just spend the night enjoying one another (with or without sex). Although it doesn't seem like it now, you are really going to miss the one-on-one time during the next 6-9 months -- get in all you can now.

As for the rest, induction isn't good, but it also isn't the end of the world. (Had two of mine induced for medical reasons.) Sometimes it's difficult to see the forest for the trees. That is, at the end of the day, the only thing you really want is a healthy mom and baby. Whatever it takes to get to that point -- even if it isn't a part of what you've dreamed about or what you've put in your birth plan -- is well worth it.

All my best to you and your family. It shouldn't be much longer.

59. You laugh, but this hospital has a policy
of asking you if you want to keep the placenta. A few years back, before the policy, a couple asked to get the placenta back when they were getting ready to leave. The hospital had to test 14 placentas to find out that theirs had already made the trip to biowaste heaven.

The whole thing was apparently rather embarassing as the couple really made one hell of a scene.

Of course, they can burn my fiancée's placenta and dance around it chanting satanic verses for all we care.

60. At least she's having the child in a civilized place.
(Note: this is not to say that out-of-hospital births aren't civilized, I love you midwives, doulas, CNMs, CMAs and NPs to death, truly.)

A grotesque scandal in one of my state's larger cities involving a "reputable" (read: well-funded and snotty) hospital basically stealing the placentas of women who'd had complications for one reason or another, running all kinds of tests on them (and recording the info with a private company whose interests are highly questionable, if you ask me) without ever telling the mothers or their partners--then lying about having done that until one of our metro dailies busted them. It's got a lot of people around here vexed, let me tell you.

65. as a doula, I honestly believe this is one example of many...
I am sure lots of hospitals do this, among other things. One client of mine wanted to see the placenta- not take it home, not eat it, not plant it, just look at it after the birth. The hospital 'misplaced it' within 10 minutes of the birth. yeah. right. it was found about thirty minutes later.

an example of hospital/doctor practice that is done without the consent of patients:

the history of cytotec use for laboring women as an induction method is horrific. Women were used as study participants without their informed consent for years. It's FDA approved use is for ulcers. It took many lawsuits for the manufactures to put wording on the label that it is not for use on pregnant women, yet still it is used off label for labor induction, sometimes to horrible outcomes. Sometimes not, but those women are lucky.

69. Yeah. If I ever decided to try to have kids, I don't know what I'd do.
And frankly, as a former healthcare professional from a medical family with many docs who embraced, you know, common sense and ethics, (especially regarding pregnant patients) the negative views I have about what goes on even in the best hospitals and birthing centers, no matter what kind of financial resources you have, are what give me the most pause about even wanting to think about a baby. Thankfully, I live in OR for the forseable future, and if I ever went the home-birth or birthing center route, as you may know, we have excellent midwifery care here.

71. you have some of the best care available in the country my friend!
you have many options available, unfortunately, it's not the case in the rest of the country. In many states, midwifery has been criminalized- simply attending a homebirth is cause for arrest for some. I also will choose a homebirth unless I am among the 10% who shouldn't. I would do so no matter where i lived- but luckily I am in CA now, where options are also numerous.

peace! (if you decide to have one, let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!)
