Sigh. I am such a geek
Edited on Wed Apr-19-06 09:19 AM by billyskank
I just had a heated row with a coworker over whether Java is open source or not. (He said yes).

15. When I was working,
we'd get these guys who argued as if they knew everything about everything. And they talked over everyone, which I consider to be very rude. So I would calmly say what I knew and let them bellow away. If I didn't know, I'd say that too -- certainly the ULTIMATE sign of weakness or incompetence in their eyes. Sooner or later, someone would discover that they were just blowing smoke. And they certainly couldn't back down to a woman. Why, that would make them look insecure or something. (Um, yeah, there were still those types around ... and they were young guys, too.)

13. Java or like....certain libraries?
Personally I stick with actual open source, like PHP, PERL, MySQL, etc.

There are libraries for Java that are open source, but Java itself, the core underpinning is not, to my knowledge, yet open source. Though there has been talk about it.

16. He meant the whole thing
He said, you can sign up and influence its development. By which I think that means you can beg Sun, pleeeease implement this feature or whatever. Which isn't the same thing as taking the code and creating your own fork to make it do what you want, which is absolutely not allowed by Sun AFAIK.

Which doesn't allow you to make derivative works and distribute them, IIRC.

42. Sun Java is - at the moment - not Open Source
At least not in the sense of "free Software", but the sources are somewhat public.

There are free implementations underway, though.

You're right by the way.

And, this isn't Java, but you know what really pisses me off? When applications are written so they take up the entire screen in such a way that you cat get to access another application without quitting. :grr: Damn lazy programmers. I could teach them a thing ot two! For God's sake, people, you use a standard WindowPtr protocol and draw your views in that instead of resorting to sprockets! You just have to be sure to use a GetNextEvent hack for your key strokes over still images, otherwise the screen won't refresh! See? Simple. (I really think DU needs a :nerd: smiley) :D

Do you mean that some might consider you a tiny weeny bit of a geek?

Surely not - how could anybody think that a person who types all of that stuff about programmes taking up the whole screen is the slightest bit geeky?????
