Seriously - grow a set of balls and go post in there. I do it and it's fun. You guys make it sound like dental surgery with rusty tools and no painkillers.

If you can't argue the facts with another democrat how are you going to convince anyone anything ever?

1. If it were that, we'd send help. It is something far worse!
It is a pit of insanity!

2. The lounge is insanity - that's reality in GD
People talking the issues and arguing their viewpoints

8. Oh no! They've gotten to you!
GD is a madhouse, a MAAAAAD-HOUSE /charlton Heston mode, but seriously all that happens is that people line up and claw at each other about some issue and then move to another issue for the clawing at each other

Sometimes it makes more sense than the Lounge.

4. But the Lounge was designed with the specific intent of not making sense.
It's that happy kind of insanity we all wish we could live in.

GD can get intense a lot of the time; I've stayed out of there for so long, I'm trying to un-wean myself back into it.

10. Actually, the Lounge was designed as a place to kick back and relax
The problem was that there was way too much discussion of a sexual nature, and they shut that down. As a result an atmosphere of chaste insanity (not unlike that of a Jr Highschool) has come to dominate

7. I like GD.
It does get really intense, but there are very serious things going on now. Sometimes people do get outright mean (I've been the target of more than a few digs, snarks, and insults), but most people who post in there refrain from making personal attacks on other posters.

Even if you don't want to post, if you haven't gone there to at least read some of the threads, I would definitely recommend it, because there is a wealth of information there.

24. i'm with you there
i have several other groups and forums I prefer to "relax" in

it's only in the last month I've even started coming in here again at all

as for GD I agree with the LynnSin. if you can't argue your point with others you can't take your show on the road (or onto Main Street) which is where we have to fight the REAL battles

13. I post in there in spurts.
Sometimes I spend days and days in there, other times just a few hours, other times I go for weeks without posting in there.

It can get pretty flamey in there. Some people think personal attacks are an appropriate way to respond to someone they disagree with, others think any disagreement is flaming and go on the defensive, and some people are just assholes. It's not the lack of a set that makes people want to avoid smacking their heads against a brick wall.

If people don't feel up to posting on every damn thing or the flamewar du jour, sticking with a subject or two that one knows well isn't a bad idea.

16. When one learns to navigate GD (eg skip over the flaming parts)
it is very informative - the range of topics, with links to different stories is second only to LBN. Have learned a lot about a broad range of issues in GD. Have also learned (though sometimes forget) to avoid certain topics/threads that are generally likely to raise the blood pressure. Still, for me, the expanded knowledge on a huge number of topics, have outweighed the negatives and slightly, well, contentious tone that emerges episodically.

20. I agree with you
I think I posted exclusively on GD for a good 9 months or so after arriving at DU in Oct. of 2003. I've survived... :silly:

However, I'm also not big into arguing, in real life or online... so, I tend to avoid posting too many provocative things.

28. I read it all the time
I just don't post

For me, it's strictly an information source. If there's something that i have a nugget of information that will contribute, or if someone is taking a blatantly illogical position, then I'll post. But, other than that, I just don't want to  not worth the inevitable flames. I don't have a thin skin, but why get insulted when I don't have to?

33. The first 200 or so posts I ever made were in GD
When I first statred here GD was much more friendly than the lounge. At least people in GD would respond to you. The lounge ignored me for months. That and I watched as many people were torn to shreds in the lounge. I'd run accross posts where one person in particular would be demeaning another lounger right under their noses. GD was not so bad back then and thankfully the lounge has gotten much better.

34. I do, I just come into the Lounge to wind down with a bit of nonsense.
My sense of humour departs after too long in there. I can only fence verbally for so long before my brain rebels aginst the dumbness.

35. GD is NOT reality.
Reality does NOT consist of a majority of zealots. GD does.

And one never actually argues facts with zealots. YOU might argue facts, the zealot just repeats his/her point of view ad nauseum, very loudly. That is GD.

I post there - and often come out frustrated when I'm done. What keeps me going is the quiet majority that wind up PMing me in droves telling me they're relieved someone else is actually thinking what they are.

36. I have just about had enough of that forum for a while
As for "how are you going to convince anyone anything ever?", I have yet to ever see anyone convince anyone of anything in GD. Usually it ends up with 50 posts saying "No, you are wrong" back and forth.

37. Ahhh, but GD is zealotry.
It's very similar to the situation in Religion/Theology right now: arguing, but not arguing based on facts. Repeating yourself very loudly ad nauseam does not make you an intelligent debater.
