A popular Chicago-area singer-songwriter known for his warm performing style and witty songs has died following a weekend motorcycle accident in Rogers Park on the city's North Side, authorities said this morning.

Tom Dundee, 59, was alone on a Honda motorcycle about 4 a.m. Saturday when he lost control and struck a parked car and a utility pole at the intersection of Clark Street and Thome Avenue, police said.

Dundee sustained several broken bones and head trauma, but underwent what friends and family felt was successful surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, said his friend and music promoter, Nancy Emrich.

"Things seemed to go well," Emrich said in a telephone interview. She said Dundee's condition deteriorated after he appeared to have suffered a brain hemorrhage while recovering from surgery.
