Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acres--which is your favorite?

Poll question: Beverly Hillbillies or Green Acres--which is your favorite?

Both created by Paul Henning. One show had poor hillbillies moving to swanky Beverly Hills and the other show had rich New Yorkers moving to the hicks (Hooterville!!) and trying to fit in. Which is your favorite?

1. Both shows were funny for their time but

I think The Hillbillies has held up better. I still watch reruns when they're available.
The show was well cast and some great writing. Just pure silliness. I wish they made shows that funny today but good quality humor writing is a thing of the past. Most shows are so nasty now.

Who doesn't remember Possum Day, the Cee-ment Pond, pickled crawdads, the fancy-eat'n table, or their truck with the rocking chair on top?

Early episodes were great.

It was sillier — sometimes to the point of being Pythonic.

It was Theater of the Absurd disguised as a TV sitcom. I enjoyed all three Henning shows, though. (Don't forget Petticoat Junction.)

Though I liked both. I especially liked the closet lesbian, Jane Hathaway, in The Beverly Hillbillies.

9. The Hillbillies for me

For some reason I never got into Green Acres. I was very young at the time and I think the silliness of the Hillbillies was more a draw to a little kid.

Oliver did the best slow burn when the rubes got the better of him.

11. I have a friend who wrote for both shows...

he said that the entire cast of "Beverly Hillbillies", with the exception of Donna Douglas, were serious drunks. Their lines were written all over the set. Notice how often they lean over, open a cabinet, are holding an object, etc... They are checking their lines.

for a very long time. So I watched Green Acres. I hated Beverly Hillbillies. It definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

Arnold was smarter than Jethro. Drysdale was funny, but Kimball and Haney were funnier.

I thought that Green Acres took itself less seriously than the Hillbillies. In other words, the actors all seemed to have a private joke with the audience that said, "isn't this silly?" Beverly Hillbillies seemed to think they were believable!

But you didn't even mention Petticoat Junction, which starred Henning's daughter as Betty Jo.

21. Love-Hate relationship

I absolutely hate the cornball jokes, I don't usually watch the reruns. But I couldn't say I hate the shows, because the characters are so loveable. Who could say they hate a show that produced Granny and Lisa? So I don't know. :shrug:

23. When I was a kid, I loved the Beverly Hillbillies, but...

...back when Nick-at-Nite was running Green Acres, I started watching it again, and caught all the inside humor I had missed when younger. The folks at Nickelodeon had it right in their advertisments when they said, "Remember, it's not dopey...it's surreal." There was a delight in making absolutely no sense in that show that makes it my favorite now.
