How far do you travel to work and what is your mode of transport?

I drive a Repair Van all over the midwest, my company pays for fuel. It cost nearly $80 to fill the beast.

I'm planning a job change and have to consider fuel costs for any commute. So I'm trying to avoid it by looking close to home, within biking distance or on a bus line.

What do you plan to do to get off the OIL TEET !

1. I don't have to travel far to get to work

It's only about ten or fifteen minutes from home but I live in the boondocks so I pretty much have to drive. However, I drive a small car with excellent mileage and I combine trips so I'm not just going back and forth.

3. I drive 40miles each way to work

but I drive a golf tdi so get 46-50mpg. I wish it were closer, but at least I can afford it with my mileage!

It generally takes about 45 minutes door-to-door, that is, not a whole lot faster than walking. Sheesh. Also the buses can be jammed to the point where I just watch two or three of them sail by; TheBus has added insult to injury by buying new low-floor buses with less seating capacity, and then deploying them on really busy routes! :eyes:

6. 15miles. In my car, which fortunately gets very good mileage

I would use public transport if it would get me there, I used to enjoy napping on the bus.

7. I go about 5 miles. Usually take the bus (and wash my hands afterward).

Maybe drive Prius about 1 day in 7.

8. I don't go to work, but I do have to drive...

I have a Toyota Sienna. I drive my son to preschool and back, and on days he goes to school, I drive my kindergartener too (we live close enough to her school to walk, but on mornings my son has school also, there isn't time to walk there and back and get my son to school on time). I also have to drive to kids' activities.

To conserve gas, I combine trips (such as stopping at the grocery store after dropping my son at school; I have to pass the store on my way home anyway) and try to get as many errands done at one time as possible.

I fill up about every 2-3 weeks.

My husband gets mileage for his work-related driving, but it still doesn't add up to what he actually spends on gas.

9. Car. It's 10 minutes to work.

The bus routes go everywhere but in a line from my apartment to my work, so
it would take me over 2 hours to get there by bus as I go downdown,
transfer to a new line, then make my way to a mile or two near my work.
(And I'd have to get to the bus stop by 4:45.)
So unless they re-route the buses, it's not going to happen.

Did I mention my car gets 35 mpg on the highway? And I don't take
any unnecessary trips?

64 on the RT. 1992 honda accord, 248,000 miles, still gets 28 mpg if I pretend there's a tiny kitten between my foot and the pedal.

I get to move soon, so I'll be very close to my new campus in Portland and I can ride the bike!

travels roughly 90 miles per day, in her car...we are in SW Missouri, no public transit...i am a sub teacher, and my mileage depends on what school i get called to...

I don't know how we can get off the Teet completely, unless my wife buys a cot, and lives at work...

I cna't believe its a toll road, my wife is still going to take the old route into Bentonville...damn, with them making it a two lane almost all the way into Bella vista/bentonville, the commute has gotten a bit shorter, but my wife started carpooling to work with her cousin, who also works in Bentonville...what part of MO are you in? or are you on the AR side? i'm in Goodman, MO...about 25(approx) miles or so from the state line...

15. I only live about 10 blocks from the school,

but I have to drive, since I sometimes have to visit other schools in the district during the day.

I also drive twice a week to Bentonville to rehearse with Vocalis, a professional choir. Its about 70 miles each way.

On the plus side, it's only about $30 to completely fill up my car every time and it's pretty fuel efficient.

Because of the number of different places I work, and the need to travel between them on short notice, with often tight scheduling, and have to cover emergencies from home, also often on short notice, the car is the only option for now.

I walk a mile to a subway station, and the subway takes me to within a few blocks of my day job.

I'm pretty hardy (and diligent), so I can do this even in blizzard conditions. But on sunny spring days like today, it verges on pleasurable.

What's somewhat ironic about it is that I work in the automobile insurance industry. (And OMG is it boring...)

4 days a week. I walk to the subway station, ride it for about 40 minutes, then take a shuttle to work.

1 day a week, I drive to work (I work the late shift), and it's about 15 miles one way.

40. I live a mile or two from work

It's about 20 minutes by bus, or ten by car, depending on traffic. I usually take the bus, but if the weather is bad I drive on some days. I may to try walking or biking in this summer, if I can only get myself out of bed early enough to get to work on time. The only problem is my walk home is up a very steep hill.

I do very little driving these days. I filled my tank up two weeks ago, and still have over 3/4 of a tank. Not having to rely on gas is a good thing.

42. I carpool with two other people.

I used to take the bus but they stopped running it near my office. There is another route I could take in a pinch, but it takes around 90 minutes. My driving commute takes 15-25 minutes depending on traffic (and only 8-10 minutes when there is no traffic). That's too drastic a time difference for me.

I could, in theory, ride a bike as my commute is only about 5 miles but I would get killed within a week. The route I take to work is too dangerous for bikes.

When all is said and done, I feel pretty good about carpooling. The two of us that drive both have pretty responsible cars and we help the third person run errands when we can (she pitches in for gas). We often shop together too, saving additional trips. Plus, we get to work warm, dry and on time. When we think of all the nights we waited an hour for the bus in driving snowstorms (or in the rain, or when it was blazing hot and humid), we're all very thankful for that.

When the weather is dry and above thirty degrees, I ride this



'05 Bajaj scooter, it gets about 100mpg, it cruises at 55-60 mph. I love my little bike.

Not that bad, 10 miles. This city has a ride share type program and if your company is signed up then the pass is only $10 a month. Warm bus, get to drink my coffe and read. Downside: time and this week my knit cap and gloves got left behind and of course no one turns stuff in.

My overall average so far is 29.56mpg, I'm trying to get close to the rated 29/38 city/hwy ratings, still breaking it in. Usually drive my wife in also, unless we have disparate activities after work, then she drives her old Neon which still exceeds 30mpg, even driven like a maniac. No public transport available from the small town we live in.

I love my little Kia though, if I fold the seats down the cargo room rivals small SUV's. Small hatchbacks and wagons are where it's at, yesiree! Just wish I could have gotten the Rio with the turbodiesel they come with in Europe, we don't get them in the US. :( Hyundai Motor Co. did announce a hybrid Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio (shared platform) to arrive in the fall, they'll be the most affordable hybrids yet (19K). What's that snoring sound coming from Detroit I hear...
