I like throwbacks like Twilight Dub Circus, Burning Babylon and Phase Selector Sound.

2. Have you heard this?

It's Jah Wobble from P.I.L. and Bill Laswell from Last Exit. Far from trad dub, it leans heavily on electronics and slick production, but still, a dub album made by two totally monster bass players ain't nothin' to fuck with.

I'm a big Bill Laswell fan.

8. I guess you have heard this

Czukay, Liebzeit, Wobble.

A guy JP apparently introduced you to gave a subset of the recordings on this to me for my birthday in 1982 or so.

I think you would enjoy the disc. You probably already own it.

9. I haven't, actually.
Which is kind of ridiculous. I should probably be trying to run down a copy of that.

10. It's a very trippy, trancey, producer-oriented form of reggae.
Pretty much the only form of reggae I like, and for my part I tend to prefer British music inspired by dub over the real stuff, but that's just my kink - a lot of the real stuff is quite excellent. Swag mentions King Tubby in a post below, and Tubby, along with Lee "Scratch" Perry, is pretty much ground zero for dub as a coherent style - lots of echo effects on the drums, slinky bass lines, neat stuff.

12. And the "plinky plink" guitar of trad reggae is buried
way, way down in the mix, if it exists at all.

30. No, dub's much slower, and with far less emphasis on vocals.
Also, dub developed in the early '70s, and dancehall came along late in that decade, approximately coincident with early developments in rap, who's process was very similar.

Really, other than being offshoots of reggae, dub and dancehall have nothing to do with one another, dub being very producer-oriented, and dancehall being, at first, almost exclusively a performance thing.

7. I like me some dub, and seek your guidance.
I hate most conventional reggae, but have enjoyed some King Tubby and stuff by his obvious descendents.

Tell me what.

Brilliant joke band, and I think they have the goods to keep it going; narrowly gimmicky stuff like that usually fails on like every possible level before long, like Dred Zeppelin (ugh).

13. Ever hear "Dub Side of the Moon?"
It's exactly what it sounds like...(except the cash-register sounds of "Money" are replaced by bong sounds, IIRC)

It, too, will synch up with The Wizard of Oz.

15. Deadbeat and Dub Trio are two of my modern faves.
But I really do prefer seventies dub a la Scientist, Prince Jammy, Yabby You, Tubby, Scratch, etc, because the lo-fi sonics will always sound a lot more psychedelic than the digital sheen of post-1980 reggae.
