Poll question: This name above the title means it's a BAD movie, the poll
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 02:51 AM by undisclosedlocation
Way back in January I ran this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=4540998
If you're one of those people who doesn't follow links (at last count, everybody), here's the folks who were suggested; the first five got at least two nominations:
Pauly Shore
Michael Bay
Jim Carrey
Stanley Kubrick
Sylvester Stallone
Uwe Boll
Steven Seagal
M. Night Shyamalan
Stephen Baldwin
Michael Ironside
Kevin Costner
Jean Claude Van Damme
Freddie Prinze Jr
Jessica Simpson
Jim Varney
Schwarzenegger
Adam Sandler
Jennifer Lopez
John Carpenter
Any Friend but Kudrow
Matthew McConaughey
Mariah Carey

I dunno; my own suggestion was direct-to-video king Richard Grieco, and I'm sticking with him. Vote Other by replying below (Sorry!)

1. I have to say Uwe Boll
Because I've worked with him and he is insane, and I mean that in a clinical diagnosis sort of way. Not a very good director, either. But he's found his niche, and he seldom goes over-budget, so he'll always have work.

Adam Sandler is another way of saying to me "STAY AWAY", but people seem to like him for some reason. Maybe when I find out why, I'll be a better person.

Matthew McConaughey is another guy who has found his niche. He's not terrible, and he can be downright fun (Age of Fire, for example).

Michael Ironside.... what can you say. He's the poor man's Jack Nicholson. And he's so prolific! If you resolved to never see a movie with Michael Ironside in it, you'd better find another hobby. Again, sometimes he's fun, too (Twist of Faith, "V", Total Recall).

Schwarzenegger is an icon. Politics aside, you know that the odds are that you're going to be entertained by pretty much anything he's in. I mean, he's a living, breathing cartoon. He's been in the USA for how long? And he still has that ridiculous accent. Plus he's in huge-budget movies, so even if the plot and acting stink, you know you're going to get a fire-engine chasing a tower crane, or a horse jumping into a highrise pool, or something nuts like that.

How can you include John Carpenter in this list? I have two words for you: The Thing. Want two more? The Fog. And why not another two words, for good measure: They Live. Pfft. Gimme a break. John Carpenter rules!

I'm not even going to comment on your inclusion of Kubrick.

M. Night Shabadoo is pretty awful. He's a one-trick pony, and we saw the trick in the "I see dead people" movie, whatever that was. I saw unbreakable and Signs, and wanted to kill myself right there in the theatre.

Segal, Van Damme..... b-rate Schwarzeneggers. Segal and Van Damme can't act to save their lives, but at least Segal acknowledges it. Van Damme (who I have worked with) is a pretentious, arrogant dickhead who really believes he's a brilliant thespian.

Stallone. I never understood his appeal. Ever. A repulsive, funny-looking troll who mumbles through everything. I don't get it.

3. I just pulled this off Wiki... on Boll...... and how he raises money....
While Boll has received a lot of negative publicity regarding this funding method, he was actually one of the few directors to use the tax shelter as intended. His films were financed, produced, and directed by a German company, which was the initial intention behind the tax shelter: to provide incentive for German companies to invest in entertainment properties. Regardless of the law's intention, most of these German film funds ended up funneling money to American studios to finance American blockbusters. The law merely required that the movie's copyright be owned by a German company; thus studios would "sell" a movie's rights to a German company, then immediately lease the movie back for a small fee, while the German owners would agree to very limited control. Essentially, the German company would own the movie on paper, but have no say over its production. <4> Because of this, in January 2006, as had been expected for several months, the German legislature changed the country's tax laws to eliminate the tax shelter. <5> It is not known if this will have any effect on Boll's funding as the new laws only seek to punish investors who are abusing the law for tax purposes; Boll's activities appear to be well within the legitimate usage of the tax shelter.

5. I added him instead of adding Other, as time was getting away from me

so he's up there now.

Edit: I didn't make the suggestions; they were the responses from the earlier thread. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I'm a huge "They Live" fan as well, by the way.

19. Uwe Boll is undoubtedly the worst.
He has THREE video game-based movies coming up. THREE!

Shyamalan's film before "Sixth Sense," "Wide Awake," I actually enjoyed.

21. Paul W S Anderson is involved with FOUR!
Writing & directing Dead or Alive & Castlevania, writing & producing Resident Evil 3 and producing Driver. Plus he's hoping to adapt Grand Theft Auto at some point.

God I hate him.

28. Sandler was great in Punch-Drunk Love, I thought.
P.T. Anderson managed to pull a solid performance out of him.

31. uhmmmmmmmm
I didn't like him in that, and I was disappointed to learn that Anderson is a fan of his.

Even when he was playing it straight, he always seems like he's '' this close to mugging at the camera.

Maybe I'm judging him too harshly, and then I think "The Waterboy", "Big Daddy", "Eight Crazy Nights", and so many more, and I wand to judge him even more harshly.

4. Jessica Simpson
if you are changing poll names. I'll vote later.

I can't believe Matthew McConaughey even made that list. :grr:

Any movie where I can look at MM can't be all bad. :loveya:

6. I thought she only made the one movie, and I'm not sure her name
was above the title. Anyway, I would have changed out one of the non-vote-getters to put her on, but time got away from me and Uwe Boll is a lot quicker to type. (Weak, I know, but still.)

7. No problem, I voted for Richard Grieco
He was my second choice.

I think you are right, Jessica only made one movie. However it was bad enough to qualify for this poll.

BTW her name was above the title.

they blow not only that they have the temerity to describe themselves as comedians. I have had toothache that was funnier.

24. Alan is so great that he directed a movie 12 yrs before he was born!
Top that, Kurasawa!

Seriously, I think by definition Alan Smithee's name can't be above the title. It was IN the title once, though, but that one killed the whole joke and apparently was worse than all the others put together:

and several other films. He rarely gets the really good roles, though.
"Smooth Talk" was another good one.

12. Disagree with Shyamalan
Some of his movies are quite good, and certianly not as sucky as many others.
Plus I hate to say it but Conan is a really good B-movie!

But I'd add to your list:
Meg Ryan
Julia Roberts
Diane Keaton (except for her early work)
Woody Allen (yes, I know, but I loathe him!!)

14. My avoidances
Eddie Murphy & Cuba Gooding Jr are becoming dud warnings.
Adam Sandler
Tea Leoni (or whatever her name is)
Steven Segal
Dolf Lundgren
Carmen Electra
Hope Davis (personally, I can't stand her whingey voice - too much like some disowned kin of mine)

20. Anymore, John Cusack and Al Pacino, much as it pains me to say
so... Cusack used to be in great, interesting movies but no more. And Pacino - "Simone" and "Two for the Money" (to name but two)? Sheesh.

Kate Hudson's gone for some stinkers, too - I avoid her movies as wayyy too cutesy.

and appears in more ambitious films, in a world where most films have no ambitions at all.

17. You forgot Wesley Snipes! (and Poland!)
A guideline I use: If Denzel Washington is in a movie, it's probably pretty good. If Wesley Snipes is in it, it's probably pretty bad.

I think Wesley gets Denzel's rejected scripts.

Just as profoundly unfunny as Pauly Shore, but he also manages to come across as condescending to his own audience! Quite a feat for someone with so little talent.
