Good Thursday Morning, Crew!

:donut::hi:
Welcome to the Thursday edition of the Early Morning Crew thread! :bounce: I hope you had a good day yesterday! We made it over the Hump Day, and so now it's clear sailing to the weekend! :woohoo: I had a good time at work. My GM called me and asked if I could come in an hour early because our District Manager was there and wanted to do her yearly review, and so needed me to mind the store while they were in the office. It ended up being a great time (our DM was in an especially good mood), so it was a good day for me!

I want to thank AirmensMom for the above sunrise picture! It is one she took recently and has graciously allowed me to use! :bounce: I think it's a beautiful shot!

It's going to be another fantastic day today! Are you ready to get it started? Well come on! Let's do it! :bounce:

2. Good morning Clint.
:hi:

I'm not so sure about fantastic day - but neither am I in anysort of malaise either....a mug of green-tea has just appeared on my desk so all is well with the world.

We've got Charles-Marie Widor's Messe a Deux Choers et Deux Orgues playing here.

9. I had coffee first thing.
and will have some more with lunch later - I try not to drink too much, mostly because I always drink it incredibly strong - in former days I was utterly adicted to caffeine (you should have seen me the year that I gave it up for Lent :scared: ).

Widor was 1844-1937 - he was essentially the founding father of the modern French organ school, having trained in the German "rational" method then Frenchifying it. He was organist at S. Sulpice in Paris for 64 years - this has one of the most famous organs in the world (it is also one of the major sites of action in the Da Vinci Code :eyes: ). He would certainly have composed the Mass I'm listening to before 1905, after that French choral music essentially died for a while.

You have probably heard some of his music unwittingly - his Toccata from Organ Symphony No. 5 is very famous indeed often being played at the end of weddings.

Well that's more than enough of my French music geekery.....

I'm sure you were a MESS when you gave caffeine up. I know I would be. I always wonder at what time all these composers you mention were writing music. It's just a random curiosity for me. I don't know why.

25. Most that I listen to are in two bunches.
The first one is from the beginnings of composed music (c.1400) to the end of the Baroque era (c.1750); and then the second is from the late 19th century to the present. My tastes are somewhat eclectic - in music as in all things....

29. Why is it....
that if a composer writes music like classical NOW, it's called "New Age"? I never understood that. Tim Janis for example. His music is written for and played by full orchestras. Yet...it's classified as "New Age". If that's the way it's going to be, "Classical" is a dead music form.

Not really.
There are classical composers around, still composing classical music. Off the top of my head: Arvo Paert, Sir John Tavener, Henryk Gorecki, Naji Hakim, Judith Weir, James Macmillan.

Whether a piece of music is referred to as classical of as new-age &c. is not so much defined by the instrument(s) it's written for, as by the actual piece and its contents. Obviously this often leads to disagreements between musicologists, especially as "cross-over" pieces are increasingly common (i.e., pieces which blur the boundaries between classical and another genre - most frequently jazz).

Part of the problem (to my mind) was that in the post-war era modern classical music became quite introverted, especially the avant garde with the pieces frequently being more intellectual exercises than art forms. Though I enjoy this stuff when I'm in the right mood - it can be very alienating for those who haven't studied it.

Still...everything I've heard recently that sounded like classical music to me (and very GOOD classical at that) is listed as New Age. I hate that.

76. Put two musicologists in a room
come back half an hour later and there's almost certainly going to be blood on the floor :eyes:

Though I'm not really a fan of cross-over, I do think that many of classical music's self-appointed guardians are too precious about it. Afterall, it is sales of cross-over and classical-lite which cross-funds the production of the more hard-core C.D.s (which tend to be very expensive to produce and have low sales).

Also genres are never really clear-cut - my line (as always) is listen to what one likes, and stick two-fingers up at anybody who says otherwise.

All that would happen would be that it would get light an hour later in the morning, and dark an hour later in the evening. Admittedly it would stay light until about 11PM around the summer solstice, but apart from that I don't see a problem.

45. Ah, economics
What I love about economics is how they pretend it's science, but behave instead like it's a religion. It doesn't matter that an economic theory has not been borne out in practice, or even that it is patent nonsense; they will continue to use it. Indeed it bears few similarities with the scientific method; there is little opportunity for experimentation to refine theories. In my opinion the only branch of science that is remotely comparable is cosmology.

I had to pick my university carefully though - some wanted to give me a B.Sc. if I studied economics; so I went north of the border and got me an M.A. instead.

It's a bit like being given several experiments, and having the results from them - then trying to draw out which factors are relevant, and which are not....

78. not tea FOR dinner, tea IS dinner. Tea is another word for dinner.
tea is not a food. In this context it does not refer to a drink, either, but is equivalent to dinner.

Repeat the following sentence with 'tea' instead of 'dinner' and you get the same thing:
I am going to have| dinner |now.
I am going to have| tea |now.

Make sense?
Or if that doesn't work, visaulise a small female off duty czechoslovakian traffic warden, then a goat standing on a mountain. Then type 55378008 into a calculator and turn it upside down, which spells BOOBLESS, which if you replace BOOB with BALL gives you Australian Foreign Policy in regards to America.

89. I've never heard it in American-English.
Where it always seems to be 'dinner'.

It is fairly common in English-English (if one can put it like that), and in Scots-English (given the above, I'd also guess in Australian-English too). Most confusingly is that it is also used to refer to lunch, or to afternoon-tea (which isn't really so much a meal as a snack) - so somebody could be talking about all sorts of different things and one has to guess from context what is meant.

167. NooooOOOoooo!! Just mine.
It is the policy of my place of residence that rather than having their own IT policy and connections, they'll snitch it all off the university next door.
The uni has many computers, all hoooked up to the internet. They must, by law, be prevented from bieng used for certain purposes. So they all run through a proxy server - the internet exists in enourmous computers known as 'servers' - here we have a small one that all the computers go to, and then IT goes to the server. Thus, it is a 'proxy server'. It has all these limits and stuff the normal internet doesn't. x(

Thank's for the good thoughts, Man! I'm not so sure about promotions...I am not relocatable right now and won't be for another 3 or so years. There's only one store here and the only position I could go up to here is GM. Since our GM isn't going anywhere...I'm not either.

I guess that means I have job security when you clean up after others.

a bit in pain because I started to go to the gym again yesterday. It will be worse tomorrow since I am going to train some other muscles today than yesterday x( I know it is for my best but this muscle ache I could do without.

182. Good afternoon to you, TJ!
 It's awfully good to see you around here too. :D

Serves me right for saying I would have a leisurely day here. Several crises, authored by others, broke yesterday while I was out. I have several fires to try to extinguish.

Are all mugs and bowls currently accounted for?

I swam a mile this morning. I hope that takes care of the blood sausages.

186. I could have predicted that much.
As soon as swimboy isn't around everything goes wrong.

You deserve a big pat on the head for swimming so far - definitely putting my lack of exercise to shame, and I need it at the moment (my stomach doesn't quite know what's hit it), though in answer to your question, yes mother I have been eating vegetables.

110. Morning Clint!
Yes, I agree - wonderful photo by AirmansMom!

I am sooo tired, worked until 9p.m. last night, and may have to work late tonight. All for a good cause though, so I don't mind.

It's supposed to get up around 70 today and sunny too, which makes me happy!

Read the threads above about giving up coffee. I'll do that every few months or so, but then I go back to drinking it. Not too concerned, I really don't drink that much. Was rather owly when I gave up soda though, that was really a hard task. Never drink the stuff anymore.

I worked until then too last night. We're looking for sunny and 89 down here in Tallahassee! :woohoo: I REALLY need to get my car washed. I'm not giving up coffee. I drink it all day long and caffeine doesn't effect me in the bad way it does some people.

that got me "emotional"....I like to stay professionally detached but every once in a while a case comes along that breaks my heart...and it makes me sad emotionally and seems to take something out of me physically...guess I get weary down in my soul...

But it is good to catch up with you ,,,, finally!!!

I'm glad you had a good day yesterday! :woohoo: We had a lot of fun here, too. Hey, I saw greekspeak here last night!

That picture looks good here! :bounce:

Harleydad had his job interview yesterday and it went VERY well! The bosses called harleykid afterwards and told her they want to hire him. Now we'll see if anything happens in writing.

Oh, and he might have found a rental house for us! The realtor says she can't get in to look at it until Monday, though. So it's possible that he'll stay a little longer. Everything is happening fast now!

152. Then I'm afraid you'll have to suffer.
:( Harleydad hates it, too.

Ah, Sashka ... poor little thing. She has "portion control" problems. If I'm not watching, she eats her food and then goes to the other dishes and cleans them up. And the other kitties let her because she's bigger. (And WHY is she bigger?) She eats really fast so I don't catch her and then she pukes it all up! So, the net result is that NO ONE got any breakfast. It's not my favorite thing to wake up to.

But thanks for the hug.

157. Not one of the favorite sounds period
my one cat "told" me when she got sick. At least when she was still a kitten. She really came to me and meowed and ran toward her litter box. First I didn't know what she ment but then the puking started. That way I could hold her over the litter box and she could puke into there. Whenever I catched her starting to puke I would get her to the litter box as fast as possible.

I'm glad to see you, too! Sophie woke me up for breakfast again ... after I hadn't had much sleep at all. Last night after I had gotten nicely asleep, all four of them jumped off the bed and started playing with the blinds. They were running from one window to the next. So I got up to see what was going on and I saw a black and white cat on the top of our screen! He looked like he didn't know how to get down. But Satchmo saw him and started screaming, which sent the others scattering. (He's VERY territorial.) Next time I looked, the other cat was gone. But I was wide awake. x( They all went back to sleep.
