Who has a wireless router?
I want to move my computer into another room, but there's no phone jack there and I can't run an extension.

Am now taking recommendations for wireless routers, based on performamce and price.

Thank you.
Carry on. :patriot:

1. Go cheap.
I did, we run 3 computers off of it, two wireless/one direct, and nobody complains.

2. Linksys here.
I have 2 laptops with linksys modem, router and printer router. Except for the fact that lynksys doesn't like my big HP all-in-one, it's been great.(Check their website for compatibility). Their customer service was fast, courteous and helpful. I'm techno-challenged and figure if I have no problems, life is good.

Pricewise, I think I spent about 175-200...you might do better with the combo-modem/router than separate...I usually check online for reviews & prices before I buy anything.

13. The store is only 2 miles from my house.
While other stores are about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes away. Plus, where else can you get an oil change, buy a six pack, and lingerie for your wife in the same store?

Works like a charm.

If memory serves correctly, it cost me about $70 a year ago - probably cheaper now.

An AVM which does everything: DSL/fast Wireless/Printserver/Fax/printserver/ISDN/VoIP/VoIP using the normal phone/good secutrity/...

It's a very cool gizmo at a fair prize (not to mention: 100% made in Berlin), but AFAIK not yet available stateside.

19. D-Link DI-624
Great performance, easy set-up, mid-range price.

We exclusively use Linksys at our business locations. I like them but they have a propensity to die untimely deaths.

I bought the D-Link at the recommendation of someone with impeccable IT credentials. He was right!

30. dunno
But for a year now, the two computers in this house that are wireless have had horrible connectivity problems. Within close proximity are five other wireless homes; don't know if that makes some kind of trouble. MY computer, not wireless, is the only one with no connectivity trouble.

21. Whichever you settle on, you gotta do one thing ...
make sure you set up a WEP (Web Enabled Password), so someone who tries to connect using your router will need a password.

You'll need to enter it too, but you can save it, and you'll connect without getting prompted.

23. I got the Linksys as well
But it's not like I am a power user anymore. I did it so that if I wanted to play on my laptop in bed I could do it and access the net from there and to exchange files between the desktop and the laptop. It saves getting another DSL modem setup, for one thing, and it gives me a little more moving room when I travel to access a wifi setup at the airport.

28. It's great.
Tried a couple of varieties, all worked, the cheap just as well as the expensive.

Don't forget to encrypt unless you want neighbors borrowing your connection. I've got some neighbors who don't know, don't care, or else it's kids whose parents are clueless. (Does your own kid have a computer but no internet connection? Their friends may have set them up with one...)

We've got a couple of laptops in our house and more boxes. It was a pain when they were all wired. Now I can sit down anywhere with my laptop, even in the yard, and if my wife decides to rearrange the furniture in a room it's no big deal.

Do you have any connectivity problems? Any drop-outs?

And is it easily hacked?

35. No connectivity problems,

...but I feel let down with respect to the support. It might just need more bandwidth, though.

Easily hacked? Well, that's a relative question. It depends on the skills and charm of the hacker, I guess.
