For asthmaticeog: What songs make you think of summer?
God, the weather is gorgeous in Philly today. Sunny, warm, all the trees are in bloom. I am itching for the summer season. Certain songs get me in that mood, too. Here are a few of my picks:

"Hot Child in the City", Nick Gilder. This is one of those songs from the 70's that nobody knows when you mention it, but as soon as it starts playing, everyone goes, "Ohhhhhhhhhhh!" Go download it right now and soak in all that delicious cheese.

"Blue Skies", Ella Fitzgerald. I defy you not to smile when you hear this song. It's like bluebirds are flying around your head and puppies cavorting at your feet.

"Summertime" DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. They performed this song at Live 8 last July 4th and everyone there, all million of us, sang along with every word. Great song.

"Pass the Peas", Maceo Parker. The reason this makes me think of summer is that I always seem to go see Maceo at some summer festival. 70 years old and he's still funkier than anyone you know.

What songs are your summer picks?

1. The Oogum Boogum Song
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 01:56 PM by redqueen
Used to listen to old soul & R&B at her house when we'd visit during the summertime. I remember her playing records and we kids would dance and play, soaking up the musical goodness.

:)

Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 02:09 PM by WritingIsMyReligion
Nice, breezy song. ;)

Don McLean's "American Pie," for some reason, also conjures up images of summer--maybe because the girlfriends and I memorized it last summer and sang it--in our very poor singing voices, might I add ;)--at every available opportunity.

Also, the oldie-moldie "Good Morning Starshine" makes me feel summerish.

:D

Any David Lee Roth Van Halen
Any Blondie
Any XTC
Queen The Game
Boston eponymous first album
Beatles St Pepper
Rolling Stones Some Girls

These are just off the top of my head - really anything short and upbeat does it for me.

11. "Independence Day" by Comsat Angels
Video Here

A declaration
Of the intention
To stop extension into my airspace
I'll put the flags up
Pull up the anchor
And then you'll know you're in a different place
And I can't stand up and I can't sit down
'cause a great big problem stop me in my tracks
I can't relax 'cause I haven't done a thing
and I can't do a thing 'cause I can't relax

You've got your habits
I've got my customs
I'm sure you know it's got to be this way
No hesitation
And in the future
We'll celebrate on Independence Day
And I can't stand up and I can't sit down
'cause a great big problem stop me in my tracks
I can't relax 'cause I haven't done a thing
And I can't do a thing 'cause I can't relax
Independence Day

Hang out the flags ring in the new,
We should be dancing on the city streets
I kmow the tune, I know the words,
My mouth is open but I cannot speak
And I can't stand up and I can't sit down
'cause a great big problem stop me in my tracks
I can't relax 'cause I haven't done a thing
And I can't do a thing 'cause I can't relax
Independence Day

14. .

Afghan Whigs - "Kiss the Floor." The chorus: "Waiting for the sun again/drink it, smoke it, stick it in"... GENIUS.

Eric Burdon & War - "Spill the Wine." The sheer groovy swampiness of the thing makes it a summer song even in the dead of winter. Must be listened to while driving with the windows (or top, if your car rocks that) down.

Ramones - "California Sun," "Do You Wanna Dance," "Rockaway Beach," hell, most Ramones songs do the job.

BTW, you do know that "Hot Child in the City" is about underage prostitutes, right?

His voice is so freakin sexy.

Spill the Wine was one of my favorites before and then after the Boogie Nights soundtrack came out, I loved it all over again. Eric Burdon was a strange duck.

Underage prostitutes? Really? But they're "runnin' wild" and "lookin' pretty"!

22. Yep, underaged prostitutes. Really.
Also, before he went solo, he had a band called Sweeny Todd* whose only hit was about an underaged groupie.

So Nick, is that a wee pecadillo in your ouvre, there? Nah, surely it's just a coincidence...

*Off-topic but funny: when he quit that band, he was replaced by Bryan Adams. No shit.

17. "Hot Fun in the Summertime" - Sly and the Family Stone and
"Summertime" Janis Joplin

"Long Hot Summer Night" Hendrix

It sure was a long long long hot summer night
As far as my eyes could see
Well my heart was way
Down in a cold cold winter storm.

Well my darlin’ where can you be? where can you be baby?
Where can you be?

There was three sugar walls and a two candy cane windows
But the serious mood melted ah all those insight
Everybody’s on fire but I’m uh snowin’ in a cold blizzard.

Where are you on this ah hot cold summer?
Where are you on this ah hot cold summer?
Where are you on this ah hot cold summer night?

Around about this time the telephone blew it’s horn across the room
Scared little annie clean out of her mind and I tell ya
Roman the candle he peeps out of his peekaboo hide and seek
And grabbed little annie from the ceiling just in time
And the telephone keeps on screamin’.
Yeah yeah yeah!

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Hello said my shaked voice, well how you doin’ I start to stutter look
Ah can’t cha tell I’m ah doin’
Fine there was my baby talkin’ she’s way down ’cross the border.

She says I’m gonna hurry to ya I’ve been a fool
And I’m tired of cryin’
Said I’m tired jimi.

Yes a long long long hot summer night
As far as my eyes could see
But I can ah feel the heat comin’ on as my baby’s gettin’ closer.

I’m so glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
So glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
So glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
Rescue, rescue me, rescue
Rescue me, rescue
Rescue, rescue, what’d I say
Rescue me, rescue me
Rescue, rescue me, rescue
Rescue me

is high.

Oh, yo' daddy's rich
an' yo' ma is good lookin'
So hush, little baby,
don' you cry

One of these mornin's
you goin' to rise up singin'
Then you'll spread yo' wings
an' you'll take the sky
But till that mornin'
there's a nothing can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin' by
oh-oh
