Anyone have restricted book lists at your kids' schools?
How are the books restricted--are they in a special "behind the counter" section of the school library, or are the books just coded in the computer as restricted? (note that the second approach doesn't prevent the child from reading the books, but only prevents him/her from checking them out of the library)

Does the school send a list of restricted books each year?

I'm asking because an Atlanta fundie is trying to ban the Harry Potter books in her county (I've posted two threads in GD on the topic). She's almost certain to fail, but I got to wondering how these restricted book lists work.

1. I don't know of any particular list at my kids school, but....
when my oldest was in the third grade, he wanted to bring in "Walter, The Farting Dog" from home to read to his classmates and his teacher nixed the idea, b/c he thought it was "inappropriate" and he was worried about other parents complaining.

and this was a book that also happened to be in the school's library, too!! :eyes:

2. fortunately no
the only restricted book I ever saw in my hometown library when I was a kid was Ulysses. So, since I worked there as a volunteer, I just checked it out "under the table." Of course, I didn't understand most of it ( and I was a very savvy, well-read kid) and had to wait a few years to really process it. :)

it's amusing when you think about books in the "restricted" section in HP being full of real monsters. ;)
In my view, the real monsters are those who try to restrict thought and questioning.

3. Just to show you how nuts this fundie is...
The HP books are ALREADY on the restricted lists at her kids' elementary school (so presumably her kids are safe from the evil HP books).

That's not enough for her though--she wants them BANNED outright, and not just at her elementary school, but in all 105 schools (elementary, junior high, and senior high) in the county.
