Whew, got my star back; that feels better. Now I feel compelled to post a poll, since I can. Let's do an oldie but goodie. Who's the best all-time rock drummer? No jazz! The jazz drummers are always better. :)

14. One thing I like about DT

is their ability to use silence. That is, pauses in music that are almost more effective than the parts with sound. Drums are CRUCIAL when it comes to deciding that kind of thing.

Not to mention, I love the little double bass riffs mike throws in here and there... he can pound away like a motherfucker, but he also knows how to be subtle.

Herrera is pretty damn tough, consistant, speed, and hits the double bass pedals like his life depends on it. I was also thinking of the drummer of Dio(can't remember his name now to save my life, i think his first name was steve, or vinnie?)....I also like Slipknots drummer, but Herrera bounces around a WHOLE lot more....:)

He's done a bunch of lead vocals on the Queen albums but never given much chance to sing other than backup or doing the Bowie part for "Under Pressure"

That's why I'm so upset with the Queen+Paul Rodgers tour - why hire a lead singer when your bands best singer is playing the damn drums

an honorable mention goes to Tommy Lee. Motley Crue never really appealed to me, but his drumming is darn good.

Another honorable mention to "Future Man" of Bela Fleck's band. Frikin amazing stuff, but he does play it on a 'drumitar', a kind of electronic drum kit built into a guitar body. You really have to see him live to appreciate it.

He wasn't overly talented, and he didn't do anything with a 3 brazillion piece drum set like Pert did, but he did usher in a trendy use of the cowbell as well as a patented floor tom/bass drum crescendo used in many rock pieces. He didn't invent either technique, but he perfected them. LOL.

Paice got the bass slightly out of synch for a nanosecond during his solo on "The Mule" on the "Made In Japan" live album. But what I always noticed about him was an uncanny knack for just the right cymbal and the right amount. That's part of what I meant by "punctuation."

He had ungodly stamina, too. I dunno how he got through 21 minutes of "Space Truckin'" on the live album — a lot of it riffs — with just one break during Blackmore's violin solo. Dude must've had Popeye arms.

Steve Gadd is a great drummer, but perhaps crosses the jazz line.

Two LA session drummers are great, too--Jim Keltner and Russ Kunkel.
