I wouldn't necessarily call it urban photography, at least by my definition of urban... Maybe to coin a new term, rurban??? Rural urban, out in the sticks urban... please, this is in no way a denigration...

your pictures are excellent, there are some, more than a few, that could or should be in textbooks... That display americana...

I am an architect. I am in the Chicago burbs, went to schoool in the city, wrote papers for art history comparing manet to monet whilst sitting in front of both at the art institute... obviously have seen Wright's structures in the area... then i got lucky and qualified to attend the U of I architectural school in versailles france... i took over a thousand pictures and sketched scores of everyday scenes...

your photos capture everyday fargo, everyday america... poignantly and clearly... i've never been to fargo but it looks like so many of the rurban centers i have visited, and they all fascinate me...

i happen to dislike the the new "faux old" downtown... they could be in mt. prospect or arlington heights in the chicago burbs, in fact thay are...... the real deal cannot be replaced nor replicated... well, it can be, but no one will pay for it

ANd I agree, I dislike the faux-historic downtown-style places as well. I'm a big fan of the new-urbanism movement, though. The architectural style in those projects are generally unique and do not try to be something they're not.

And I think the term "urban" is relative. For you being from Chicago, you'd be right in your description. But to the millions of people living in rural America, a place like this would be considered VERY urban.

Just in case you didn't know, Fargo-Moorhead is a metro area of roughly 209,000 people.

8. You are correct as to "urban" being relative

The suburbe of Mt. Prospect & Arlington Heights, where I grew up probably now have a population of 150,000 combined, but they are not urban. I have always been fascinated by what I have above refered to as rurban. I never take interstates on vacation, preferring to see america, not billboards and fast food chains. There are county seats in the sticks with 25,000 pop. that are more urban than my more populated suburbs.

My term, and not really seeing Fargo-Moorhead as meeting my personal vision of urban is in no way to mean it is lesser in any way except size. Bigger is not always better, it is just my perspective. Heck, to me Salt Lake City is not terribly urban.
