Shabbat candles? (My particular speciality in science means I see something I don't know, I ask about it, be told, think it MIGHTILY interesting, then forget. So I probably have heard it before ;))

which starts at sunset on Friday, they light candles because using light switches counts as working.

It's preserved as a custom by many who don't keep to such a strict interpretation of Jewish law as well.
