This just gives me the willies and heebeejeebees.

A woman was driving in her Lexus with her 3 children and a deer came right through the windshield and ended up completely in the front seat. Then it went completely crazy trying to get out of the car and killed the woman - it's antlers went right into her face.

The kids all survived with fairly minor injuries - they were in the back seat. One son threw himself over the littlest guy and the little one was not hurt.

We have so many deer here in Kansas City and they are always crashing into cars. We have something like 8,000 deer collisions a year. Go out onto any highway and there are dead deer lying by the roadside.

I've seen deer, cats and racoons that were running towords the road stop since I've had whistles on my car. My husband lost his whistles in a snowbank (Boy, that sounds bad, doesn't it?) and all of a sudden he saw all kinds of deer on his daily commute. All the sherrif's cars here have them. 5. It's our fault, really

Deer/elk population in CO is exploding due to development scaring off all the predators. I believe it's happening everywhere.

Had a story in our local paper about a guy hitting a 380-pound black bear at night. Had no idea what happened until he woke up in the hospital.

On edit: just re-read the story, it was 325 pounds.

except down in the Ozarks I think there have been some black bears sighted.

We have no predators here for the deer - except cars. And I guess there have been some cougars that have come in here following the river. The result is a deer population that is way out of control. And you can't just open up hunting because they all live in the city.

And I found out there was a pack of wolves in Wyandotte County (Kansas City, Kansas). They've lived over there for years. But they have had to move them out of there because they were starting to bother things - menacing pets and children. I had no idea we had wolves here. We do have a lot of coyotes and I guess even bobcats. But no one ever sees the bobcats as they are only out late at nite. I've never seen one.

A lot of people over there were really upset that the wolves were being moved. They loved having them there. So they couldn't have been menacing much of anything.

There are always people who just can't stand having wildlife around - they feel threatened.

Now, the cougars I can understand. I like cougars but I sure wouldn't want one in my back yard when I let the dogs out.

you meant to say that no wolf had ever been documented to kill a human in north america in modern times, a statement now made untrue by the saskatchewan incident

in any case, when wolves existed in pre-1900 numbers they killed and ate humans just fine, they are predators, not stuffed toys, now that they are returning to higher levels of population, some people will be killed, it is simply inevitable consequence of a larger population of predators

people didn't spend great time and effort eliminating predators because they were just uncouth horrible people, but because they were not willing to risk for sake of a wolf

it is disrespectful to ask people to take on risk and possible sacrifice and then deny the reality of their risk and sacrifice

wolf attack is rare because wolves are rare

if wolves were common, wolf attacks would be common -- just as dog attacks are common

That last sentence should read "the RE-introduction of the grey wolf" since they were native to that area and killed off by humans wanting to eradicate them. By "mess up" they mean the reduction of trophy elk, pronghorns, mule deer and other wildlife so dear to hunters.

problems with deer/car collisions. The highway near our place up north has a 55 mph speed limit. This is way to fast to drive when, at any moment, a deer can run out into the highway. I drive 40-45 mph when I am on this highway. If people want to pass me---fine. I see dead deer lying on the side of the highway that have been hit by cars all the time. I know people who have hit deer several times, totaled their cars, and suffered injuries. I have had many close calls just by driving 40-45 mph---close calls that would have turned out to be collisions if I had been driving 55 mph. An average of 12 people per year die from hitting deer in Michigan. I don't want to be one of them.

deer come flying out. Our woods are full of underbrush and you can't see 2 feet inside from the road.

You're right, that is a horror story and those poor children are going to have some difficulties dealing with the trauma of seeing their mother killed in such a way. But you make it sound like a crazed deer simply leaped through the windshield.

We have many deer around here too and I see them dead by the road a lot. They're not committing suicide by leaping into vehicles - they are hit by cars and trucks. Deer panic and get confused and they can jump out into the road suddenly - that's why people need to be aware, to drive defensively, to scan the sides of the road as well as what's in front of them and to drive at a reasonable speed that will allow them to take evasive action.

i was in a car involved in a deer/car collision (not as driver), people are not being real abt this, the deer can jump out so fast there is no time to react, if you are driving at a safe speed, you're going to have an accident, if you are driving too slowly, fine, you may be able to swerve and get away from the deer but at some point you are going to be rear-ended, dead or injured is dead or injured however it happens and driving too slowly and nervously puts you at just as much risk or more

there is a point at which being afraid and paranoid can't save you, it can only make you miserable

we have a huge overpopulation of deer in this country and it's killing us, not just or even primarily from these accidents but from lyme disease which is destroying people's ability to safely enjoy the outdoors in much of the northeast

23. I had a deer crash into my Jeep.

I was driving along a county highway through farmland (Bumfuck, NJ) at night. Pretty in the day, boring at dark and with no lights. I was doing about 50 mph (speed limit). Without warning, a deer ran out of the field and hit the front corner of my jeep. It turned around and bolted back into the field. I ended up not even stopping because my headlight was still working. I got lucky because the only damaged caused to my Jeep was a crack in the headlight and a tiny patch of fur stuck to the side of the front bumper. Not even a real dent.

I never bothered to fix the crack. The Jeep has 137,000 miles on it, so I really don't care about it, as long as it runs. It runs great and apparently is pretty resilient against deer.

I saw it take off from the side of the road and I slowed WAY down and it came about a foot from hitting the driver's side window with me right there. I think we were both pretty startled by it.

My Dil has a car with a dent in her passenger door where a deer ran smack into it. He left his deer fur around the edges of the door and left. I also had one just about jump through my windshield..jumping out of a cornfield on the passenger side of my car..but he did this beautiful turn and landed beside my car..both car and deer unhurt. All I saw were legs coming and thought OH CRAP. My heart was in my throat for miles. It's amazing how high they can jump.

With that said, more deer do die from being struck by the cars. We've stopped many times on less traveled roads as one deer crosses the road..only to realize there are more coming behind it. It's difficult though on the expressways..too much traffic going too fast. That's where I've seen the most dead deer, laying along the interstate hwys.

63. My friend and I were coming back from the beach

It was 10:30 in the morning.
She was driving a Camry and I was sipping a soda next to her in the passenger seat.

I see what I thought was a dog running down in the ditch along side of us when all of a sudden the damn thing jumped in front of the car. We were going 70 mph, and the it made an imprint of it's shape on the hood and sailed back over top of the car.

We pulled over and a guy two cars behind us stopped to make sure we were okay. He said the deer sailed about 20 feet into the air.

The odd thing was the airbags did not deploy at all.

I guess we were lucky considering the speed we were going and the fact it hit the hood and not the windshield.

I am pretty sure some of the animal/car wrecks I responded to as a paramedic sound like "urban legend" to some people also.

A deer going through the windshield of a moving vehicle is not that uncommon--Michael and I had a couple of deer hit us on Thanksgiving night--we were lucky--we weren't hurt. The deer probably died later. The Subaru had about 1,700 worth of damage.

73. My brother hit one two weekends ago

He was on the way to his job at the GA Renaissance Festival in Fairburn (SW of Atlanta, semi-rural/exurbs) heading down I-85 when one jumped in front of him. The impact crunched the driver's side light and panel and drove in the windshield, but not breaking it. He was close, so he made it in to the Festival. He was cruising pretty fast, so it was...done. :( I've seen live deer near the highway in the metro area, not just the rural sections.
