What's there to do in Poughkeepsie NY?

I have to be there all this coming week for my job. So what is there to see and do on the off hours?

one Week a few years ago for my job too.

You'll need a good imagination or a DvD player and good selection of DvD's.

(to be fair I didn't have much opportunity to explore and it was late December - I nearly got stuck in the area over the xmas holiday)

is very interesting. But it is a bit of a drive from Poughkeepsie and on the other side of the river. Olana is one mile south of the Rip van Winkle Bridge over the Hudson River at Catskill, NY. It's pretty easy to get to admittedly. You take the Thruway up to Exit 21, Catskill/Cairo (pronounced Ke-row) and follow the signs for Route 23 - Hudson. Cross the Rip van Winkle Bridge and turn south on Rt. 9G (just so you know, there are a bunch of Route 9s in NY and NJ - when I lived in NJ, Route 9W was just up the hill from us). Go about 1 mile on 9G and there is Olana. My mom was from South Cairo and both her sisters and a brother lived in Catskill, so I grew up visiting them there. A couple of times we went to Olana. You could actually see the Rip van Winkle Bridge from my one aunt's house because it was on a bluff overlooking the Hudson. I haven't been back in years since everyone is dead, so I imagine there are 3 McMansions blocking the view from what was once her house. It's roughly 40 miles from Poughkeepsie to Olana. However, Olana is interesting.

The folks up there are very happy to have nothing to do besides go to NYC.

Vassar is in Poughkeepsie....

You could also search the NY Times web site for Poughkeepsie.


But, Poughkeepsie's best quality is its proximity to NYC.

There are some music venues plus Vassar and Marist are nearby (opportunities for other entertainment)

18. I'd go with "Hyde Park" FDR's Estate, too. Lots of history exhibits and

it's kind of timely given you are a DU'er. Vanderbuilt Mansion is near there with good exhibits, Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck (a 200 hundred year old Inn with food) and New Paltz (with State University of NY and 300 year old Dutch Buildings) are Early American Towns with much to see if you like old towns.

If you have a day or two you could hit those and then get the train into NYC. But, there's lots to see in that beautiful part of NY State on the Hudson River.

20. The Beekman Arms! Yes. A great place steeped with colonial history.

Rhinebeck is a cute little town and that part of Dutchess county has lots of charm. Rhinebeck used to be known for antiques.

A leisurely drive up the river road (route 9-G) especially north of Rhinebeck is a nice way to see the valley on your way up to Olana.

13. Visit the CIA.....

The Culinary Institute of America, that is. Friends used to live in the area and they headed there for special occasion dinners. It is in Hyde Park.

24. Go over to New Paltz. You'll have a better time than in Poughkeepsie.

Guilded Otter is nice. Go to the Gunks - world famous climbing & nice hiking. Go to Woodstock for the day. Basically, go across the river. Rhinebeck is nice too, North of Poughkeepsie. (I grew up in Poughkeepsie, lived there until a year ago when I moved to Maine) You can see if anyone decent is playing at The Chance. I don't know what else to tell you, there's not a whole lot to do in Poughkeepsie but drink like other people said.
