Does Lactaid have any "attractive" side effects?
I found a pill case my wife had lost, and I had to look up one of the pills, as she had forgotten what it was. I found the answer on the drugs.com message board, so out of curiosity (and boredom), I started looking up the other pills. It seems as though a lot of parents are posting that they're finding prescription bottles filled with generic Lactaid pills in their kids' bedrooms. (They were posting because they didn't know what they were.) I can't for the life of me figure out why kids would be hiding such a thing, unless they have some sort of side effect that might kick in if they take enough. Anybody know of such side effects?

1. I have no clue, but if you've got access to a PDR,
Physicians' Desk Reference, it will tell you everything you need to know. You can generally find one at your local library.

3. It's a natural enzyme
so I don't think there'd be any real side effects that would be of interest to kids (?)

4. maybe they're just embarassed to be lactose intolerant
or they think it'll help keep weight off somehow. The third possibility is that there is a lactose intolerant drug dealer out there, and the kids exchange the lactaid for something good.
And my final suggestion is that the lactaid is a symbol of something random and it's some weird group ID thing

5. That's bizarre.
I probably would have heard of even a rumor that Lactaid is fun. I remember one of my friends in HS taking buying an excedrin for $20 though. She thought it was Ecstacy because it was red and had an "E" on it. Kids can be stupid.

6. As someone who occasionally takes Lactaid pills,
There's absolutely no reason I can think of why someone who wasn't lactose intolerant would want to take one.

I'm not terribly intolerant -- but I do trend that way (as does my family), so I take them every once in a while just so I don't get hit with massive cramping, etc.

And, outside of that, they pretty much do absolutely nothing.

7. Maybe they're cheating to win the Milk Challenge

Drink a gallon of milk and hold it down for one hour. Even for the lactose tolerant this is tough but taking lactaid makes it a little more possible.
