3. I have this fear of getting stung.

When we first moved here, I encountered a wasp nest outside. The backyard used to be covered in ivy- and the nest was hidden in there. I stepped in it. I was heading to a neighborhood party. I made quite the entrance - literally, running and screaming.

For now, I have two of the three wasps trapped inbetween a window and a screen. I killed the first one. Maybe that is why the other two came in - they heard their buddy's screams of death.

My cat is sitting here uselessly sunning herself. She used to hunt bees.

I don't use many "spray" items. Do you think regular ole' windex will work? I do have furniture polish too.

conditioner, or furniture polish spray, but that is harder to clean up :evilgrin:

2. Those fuckers get into the most unlikely places.

My husband and I were out Saturday, stopped at the grocery store, and when we opened the rear hatchback to load our stuff, found THREE small wasp nests along the underside of the hatchback door, each with a wasp on it, and another pair of wasps caught mid-coitus. There was much stomping, swatting and swearing. I am NOT sad to report, all the wasps perished.

4. It's that time of year.

It's nature. They're building nests and makin' babies.

I use the Ortho wasp killer (we get lots of 'em). It's a foam. It sprays about 20 feet in one concentrated jet. And because it foams up, it freezes them where they are.

The best time is early evening when they all come back to the nest. They don't fly around as much and are gathered in one spot.

I always feel bad, because they are just doing what comes natural. But they are just to aggressive to have around me, my girl, and our pets.

I would love a suggestion for something more environmentally friendly. I sprayed up into one of the eaves of the house last year. Almost straight up (like a real morAn). The fallout landed on my skin. It made me feel like I'd been huffing fumes. And I felt like that for a couple of hours. Like I was walking on clouds. And not in a good way.

Tell me that stuff ain't toxic.

The goodnews is that the foam disperses in a matter of minutes...and all the dead little wasps are frozen in the spot they were sitting when the foam hit 'em.

15. I was kidding, really.

I'm not even considering trapping the fuckers. I'm not sure why they've chosen to dance on that portion of the roof, but I plan on planting myself up in the spare room tonight and opening up the window to scare the shit out of them. There is a part of our roof that is flat that just happens to be right over our bedroom - and that is where they've decided to boogie. I swear they wait for the lights to all go off and then start dancing up there. Lights out. Boogie time!

My recently deceased cat used to hang out on the roof- he probably was responsible for chasing them off.

but I can't help but be amazed out how cunning those little fuckers are.

It is virtually impossible to keep them out of a place they want to be.

When I was a teenager, we had a family of them on our property that I followed for several seasons. Trained them to eat out of my hand. Watched them have several babies. Unfortunately, the Mother and Father died a few months apart. And the young ones never stuck around.

My neighbors cat has made friends with a couple of them. The play and roll around together. Very odd. Especially since the cat likes to kill birds. But for some reason, never his buddies the squirrels.

It is a good spray foam that coats the nest. I have taken out 10 already this year. If you have an attic or a rook with vents, check by the vents. They often get in via the vents.

7. Underneath this part of the house is vent city.

It is an old enclosed porch that is now part of the house. There are vents everywhere since it doesn't sit on a foundation. Someone (not me!) will be crawling under there tonight. Unfortunately, they are popping up at the opposite end of the house from the access point, so that someone (not me!) will be crawling a good 40 feet before he finds anything.

most wasps/hornets are only nasty when you are close to the nests. If you do it correctly, you should be able to spray from 20 feet away. I climb into the attic and try to aim between the rafters.

cold places the queens are the only ones to hibernate over the winter. They find a small space to crawl into, then wait for the weather to warm up. They build little nests for a few workers, who then start bringing home food to build a bigger nest with. In the fall, the workers lose an enzyme needed to digest food. They get food, bring it back to the nest, and are slowly starving to death. That is why they get so uppity nasty come fall. The queen survives through the winter on this stored food. Repeat.

Never tried it on a nest or anything, so I wouldn't reccommend it, but when they get in the house I nail them with hairspray and it sticks to their wings and they can't go anywhere.
