You know what, Mom? Two weeks isn't long enough.
:eyes:

My teenaged daughter said this to me when I returned from the airport with my FIL, her grandfather who was in Boston for two weeks. (I am sorely tempted to sic matcom and DS1 on him the next time he goes, the scotch alone would kill him)

Anyway, I digress. I picked him up at the airport and spent 45 minutes listening to him talk about 'that nice Arab girl with the big brown eyes who helped me', and that 'really nice Italian girl at the supermarket' and the people at the senior center and blah, blah, blah.

He isn't that bad, but dear Lord, he is such a bigot. He categorizes everyone based on their ethnicity. 'She's a great Armenian cook', 'Where is that nice Irish boy who was here yesterday'.

I have decided to tell him only people's first names. He told me my friend Rich, who is of Polish descent was 'Iranian'.

I have a VERY. HARD. LIFE.

3. You. Suck.
However, just because you posted that adorable picture of you and the Mrs. at Fenway, I do plan to send you a picture of her on prom night.

And, no. She ISN'T getting a hotel room. She will be at post prom and I will be there, too.

13. Listen. In the interests of keeping this clean....
Psst DS1, you know who is online, so behave yourself.

Her school does a great post prom party to keep the kids from drinking after the prom. The parents are asked to contribute, there is food, games, prizes, etc.

So, after the prom, which is held at the school, she will go to the post prom and have fun all night under the watchful eyes of about 50 parents.

Go on. I dare you. Make something out of that. :P

2. Aren't you trying very hard to keep matcom *away* from your daughter?
So you might want to hide her in a closet or something if you're going to have matcom around.

11. Peggy remember that time I posted last summer about
his comments to me regarding my cursing?

I was cursing up a storm because we had to remove the sunroom airconditioner and someone hadn't put the cover back on. It was 100 degrees and I was air conditioning the whole street.

Well, I was cursing up a storm, F this, F that. NO ONE around mind you, except him and me.

He said to me "you better stop that. You will have a hard enough time getting into Heaven as it is"

This from a man who spices every sentence with Jesus Christ or God damn.

6. Reminds me of my FIL.
Anyone with skin even a shade darker than his gets called "that colored boy/girl". I refuse to be in the same room with him. (He is much worse than your FIL, though, as he is also antisemitic and homophobic.) Luckily he lives half a continent away and I don't have to deal with him on a day-to-day basis.

He actually thought one of my daughter's friends was the pizza delivery boy because he is black.

Oy.

Plus, he loves O'Liely.

The things we do for family.

Make up last names... mix and match... keep him guessing.

"This is my friend Akbar O'Brienstein."

"Dad, I'd like you to meet Allen Waldenski"

"If my friend Doris Shaheedmeister calls, tell her I'll be back in an hour."

18. I am so sorry; I can relate.
I think my in-laws are in the Klan, or at least they should be. You can't broach any topic with them without someone being put down as either a (1)jigaboo; (2)Mexican; or (3) Ay-rab.

A young niece had to be corrected for saying that a group of people were speaking "Mexican." Sweetie, the language is called Spanish.

And to top that off, my sister-in-law, who is a nurse, was talking about a relative who recently gave birth to a mongoloid child. Isn't that a pejorative term? Yeah, I thought so. :eyes:

23. Grrrr. I know that feeling. My grandma still walks around saying, "That
colored girl who help us..." or "Coloreds are okay with me..." I know some of it comes from background and what was PC to say decades ago. But, by God...you watch the news...you exist in society.

24. Maybe I'm not getting the whole story...
but he doesn't seem so bad based on the comments.

I agree, people shouldn't preface such statements with a person's ethnicity, but he doesn't seem to be saying anything bigoted, just a bit uncouth.

He'd probably refer to me as "that Indian guy who smiled at me" or something like that, and I wouldn't take offense. :D

25. Oh, trust me, he's bad.
Everything he says is prefaced with the ethnicity of the person he is talking about. It gets so fricking tiresome.

26. But the comments he makes seem harmless.
I.E., "he's a nice guy," "she's a nice woman," etc.

Yeah, the ethnicity thing may be off-putting, but maybe he doesn't mean any harm by it,

27. They WOULD be harmless in another situation.
Here's an example.

My little one had a friend over who has an Italian surname. I had put a plate of olives on the table because FIL likes them. Of course, 9 year old little girls aren't really big fans of Greek olives.

After the girls left, he says to me "A nice little guinea girl like * doesn't like olives"?

AARGGGGGHHH!!!!

He is getting old enough and forgetful enough that he is going to say something like that in FRONT of the kids.

28. Interesting.
Although "guinea" is much different than "Italian."

If he's using actual slurs, then that's a problem.

I am constantly having to tell him not to say certain things.

I just keep telling myself that he can't possibly live forever. I know, I know. Mean.
