Are there really cliques here in the Lounge?

But I find that even if I were to define cliques here their definition would include so many exceptions that it would be useless. It would be nice to say all friends of x are y, or that everyone who posts in Group z is a dick, but rarely are these generalizations accurate. And barring weird personal shit, you can get along with basically anybody here by not being an asshole.

Originally on DU there was no "Lounge."

There was a "contest" to name it; I think I suggested the Front Porch or something like that.

The very original DU also had a true underground where you had to have slept with someone that knew WillPitt to get into. That was exciting...I never asked to get in.....but, then one day there was a Conservative Infiltrator...and we have had high Conservative Infiltrator drama ever since.

13. It depends on who you ask, ZN.

There are people here who are in contact with one another outside of DU. There are people who are more likely to respond to posts by people who they "know". I guess you could call that sort of behavior "clique-ish" but it seems to me that it's more of a case of human nature.

Myself? I'll admit that I'm more likely to respond to people that I'm familiar with in the Lounge. In GD, I'll say what I want to say about an issue (unless someone else has already said it), without regard to who posted it.

On the other hand, there are some who see "cliques" (I really hate that word, BTW) whenever someone says something that they don't personally like. Such is the nature of a message board, I suppose.

Sometimes I just get tired, though, or can't think of anything else to say.

I've gotten to the point where I don't care to start personal threads in the Lounge. It seems that some people get upset if you don't reply to them. To be honest, I don't have the time to thank/recognize/respond to everyone. Additionally, I don't feel "right" about kicking my own posts by bumping my own threads. I don't feel a need to seek acceptance, and whoring my own threads makes me uncomfortable.

you don't notice them until they are aimed at you. Now, I personally have never had that happen here, but I think it's ridiculous to think there AREN'T cliques. Wherever humans gather, over time there will develop at least small cliques. Nothing so obvious as "jocks" or "nerds," nothing that can be given a name, but rather groups of people who act as each others' posse.
