Poll question: would you have elective plastic surgery
either to "enhance" your looks or to disguise the effects of aging?

1. No.
I am a homely bastard, but I will keep my glaring imperfections.

I see those shows on Discovery Health Channel regarding plastic surgery. To me, they romanticize or glamorize self-image problems. Don't like something? Get it cut!

People should do whatever makes them happy, though.

3. But, I like that thing on the end.
And I have about 3 inches too much as it is, no need for more...

Okay, that is a lie.

But I am happy in my stuntedness..:P

5. I came very close to having a breast augmentation
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 09:41 PM by GloriaSmith
I was certain for years that I wanted a boob job. At one point I had the money, I researched the doctors and I had the consultation but once the "dream" became a reality, I couldn't do it. At the end of the day, the idea of elective surgery...cutting my body open BY CHOICE just seemed so ridiculous.

It finally occurred to me that my negative body image wouldn't improve just because my breasts were larger. If anything, it would just give me different things to hate about my body...the scars, the fact that they looked fake, the pain, the sudden lack of sensation in my nipples, etc. It wasn't until I started to accept my body that I realized that, while my breasts are small, they're pretty freakin' awesome! I'm almost 30 and my twins still defy gravity! :D Seriously, they couldn't find South if they had a compass. I would miss them right now if I changed them years ago.

7. Yes. My eyelids were very droopy, runs in the family, and I had them
"repaired"...and I am very happy with it. I don't scare little children anymore, either. If I feel like something else needs a tweaking, I will consider having it done. It's no big deal. You get your teeth fixed when they need it, don't you?

8. did it effect your vision?
I have "heavy" eyelids and I remember when I was in 4th grade (!!) a classmate said I looked stoned. I had no idea what the hell that meant at the time but I knew it wasn't a compliment. Once he explained it to me (!!!) I sat for hours in my room making my eyelids go up as far as they could.

38. Yes, it did effect my vision, especially when driving long distances.
It made a huge difference, and insurance will pay a portion of the price of the surgery if the doctor agrees that your vision is compromised.

10. Frankly, I would not do it......
Surgery for that sort of purpose scares me.....Too much can go wrong...

But, OTOH, if I'd had a mastectomy, I might very well go for a saline implant to restore some semblance of balance and normality.....

But that would be the extent of it.....

but the brutal reality is that we live in a visual society, those who look better those who look younger are paid more money and are also eligible to marry spouses who have more money

i would invest in a stock if i thought it would bring me a nice return, why wouldn't i invest in myself?

i don't dislike myself so much that i would make excuses not to do improvements

you'd fix up your house, why not your body

She's 65 and has lived with it all her life. Her Dr. thinks it will be better for her in the "long run" to have it done. Hope it goes well. I think I have one but 'don't think its important enough for general anesthesia.

The only way you'll ever see me in a plastic surgeon's office is if I am ever disfigured in an accident or something like that. I refuse to cater to this society's obsession with youth and beauty (whatever that means) by having surgery that isn't necessary for my health and well-being.

24. I'd get it done
Right now I'm young, thin, and a great chest. My mother is going to be 54 and is mistaken for my sister naturally. However, I see no reason not to get cosmetic surgery if you want it and you have the money. There's nothing wrong with fixing things up, if that's what you want. Who knows, I might get it when I'm older? If I want to change something and I can afford it, I'll do it.

28. I have a long scar on my cheek from a dog attack when I was 4
When I was 18, mostly because my mom wanted me to, I had surgery to make it look better. Now, very few people notice it unless I point it out. But I kind of liked my scar. Of course being attacked by a dog was horrible, and I remember way more of it than I want to, but it happened and it never bothered me so much that I had it. It bothered my mom, though, who has always been very looks conscious.

I wouldn't have plastic surgery again, and I won't encourage my daughters to, either.

35. To remove excess skin, if I could afford it!
Two pregnancies left me with a bunch of excess skin and "pooch" on my belly. Even when I was down around 80 lbs, it still looked flabby and saggy! I'd have that repaired so I could fit into my old pants, if I could afford it.

42. I would too. After my twins the same thing happened.
It wasn't so bad after my first son, but after the twins my stomach was so stretched out there is just skin hanging. At 33 there isn't the elasticity in my skin that I used to have. Even if I had the money I wouldn't do it because I have a blood clotting disorder. The risks associated with the surgery aren't worth it. I would love to not have this extra skin though! I had to take my old pants to Goodwill.

46. I wouldn't do "elective" surgery....
But I don't think less of those who do. If someone really feels that a nip and/or tuck would help--they should go for it. Sometimes one part of the face or body "goes South" before the rest.

I DO understand why movie folk have work done--the camera expands every flaw. However, enough is enough. It's one thing to get a few more good years, but the face can stand only so much stretching. And, those swollen lips....

47. I'm going to apply to extreme makeover
with all my weight loss, I have a lot of extra skin that is keeping me in larger sizes than my body really needs.

Besides that, I lost weight all over my body, except for my breasts, and now I have a pretty big disparity between the sizes for slacks and skirts versus the size for tops. (I still have to shop in the plus sizes for my shirts--not so for clothing for my lower body). I'm thinking I'd like to do a breast reduction.

And since I'm applying for extreme stuff, I may as well attack the entire wish list. I'd like my nose to be a bit more narrow, and I'd love to have a facelift.

I'd also like to have my teeth whitened.

I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaay too uncomfortable with the idea of pain to have any sort of surgery that wasn't absolutely vital.

In any case, I don't even care about my figure flaws enough to consider it- the way I see it I eat good food and take pretty decent care of myself, so this is a healthy shape for me even if my butt is a bit squashy.
