The salvage economy is alive and well in Milwaukee.
I am nearly finished clearing out my old place (I even cleaned the oven...eww...and fridge last night). There were a few things I didn't want, and weren't worth selling or freecycling (nasty pantry shelving, a busted TV, that sort of thing), so I set them on the curb. 10 minutes later, they were gone.

I'm gonna put my old Performa 6400 case there tonight and see what happens. (I've taken the guts out of the machine -- I was gonna wipe the drive, but it barely boots, so I'm gonna make something out of the boards and cards instead.)

1. Oh yes
My city has a curbside "cleanup" day (actually 5 of them - based upon the day of the week one's garbage is hauled away)

People literally go out with pickups and trailers and weed through all the stuff put out at the curb.

3. When I get rid of my behemoth of a monitor,
I'm just going to put it curbside with a sign that says, "Take It, it works." It should go in a snap.

4. I've moved from an area with curbside trash pickup to alley trash pickup--
I wonder whether things will go as fast in the new neighborhood.

In any case -- this is why I don't want to live in a fancy-pants suburb. Even in my old not-so-fancy suburb, I would have gotten a nastygram from the public works department: "You're not allowed to leave items at the curb other than on your designated trash pickup day." (I left a non-functioning microwave there once, which unbeknownst to me isn't allowed in city trash, so it sat an extra day or two waiting for the specialty hauler, and I got a threatening letter from the city.)

5. A friend and I went junking last night
I didn't find anything this year that I was interested in, but my friend got a stereo receiver with tape decks and speakers. He said it sounds good. He also got an almost new vacuum cleaner. Said it was just clogged. Works good. He also found an old DVD player, but that didn't work.

Last year I found a slightly used computer chair. I'm sitting in it right now. It's still going strong.

6. I was amazed at the stuff we were able to give away like that!
At least you know someone is getting to use it. Couches, lamps, chairs, tables, etc. It saves a trip to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.
