What song consistently brings you to fear?

The easy vote for me would be "Hamburger Lady" by Throbbing Gristle. Damn that shit is creepy. :scared:


For those not familiar with TG, it's a proto-industrial song about a woman who is burned alive in a car crash. The only "music" in the song is the sound of a revving motor and the vocals, which are run through some kind of oscillating effect.

1. "In the Pines" - either the Nirvana or Bill Monroe version will do.

That song creeps me out.

2. Have you ever heard the Mark Lanegan version?

It's off his first solo album, and features Kurt and Krist from Nirvana. By far my favorite version.

I know he tends to work with a lot of artists that I really like, PJ Harvey and Greg Dulli, for example. I should get more familiar with his work.

The first time I played through Procol Harum's "The Dead Man's Dream" on my own piano it gave me a full-blown panic reaction.

But it doesn't happen every time (only when I get it right after repeatedly screwing up?).

A better answer might be Schoenberg's 3rd string quartet.

I am haunted by the use of it in The Stand.Whenever I hear it,I get the willies remembering the camera panning over all the corpses.Sometimes,when I read articles about the H5N1 virus,I can hear that song in my head.:scared:

Also of interest in the same genre (and even on the same label) is "Slow Death" by a group called the Leather Nun. They're a Swedish industrial group, and contemporaries of TG. "Slow Death" is the same theme as "Hamburger Lady", but features a slow, droning bassline and drums, with wierd squeeky ARP 2600 sounds over the top with an agonizing vocal line.

Good stuff, if you're into that kind of aural torture.
