Keep your ticks to yourself, if you don't mind. I've had Lyme disease already.

And trust me, he's got PLENTY of "yard" around here.

staring at the deer (there were three) and you could almost see the "Jesus! What the hell are THOSE huge things!" running through her little bird brain.

11. couple city kids were over last wkend, "oh, look at that cute deer"
I live in a clearing in the woods and those giant rodents eat everything. We have a dog whose main purpose in life, besides barking at airplanes and impersonating a rug, is Chasing The Deer To The Edge Of The Woods. So I told those city kids, see what we do with the deer here, and let the dog loose. Bet those kids never come back and eat all my food and drink all my drinks and use up all my towels.

12. Awwww look at that face!
They are beautiful creatures..as long as they're not in front of my car or eating candy out of my pocket. Yes..I did have one do that years ago..hubby with one tot on his shoulders, our 6 yr old walking and our other toddler on my shoulders walking through the woods and it snuck up behind me to get the roll of candy that was sticking out of my rear pocket. Scared the bejeebus out of me.

So is it eating your rosebushes yet or haven't you invited him/her to dinner?

13. No rosebushes. No tulips, either. BIG fence around the vegetable garden.
There's lots of chow for those guys in the woods behind the house. I'd not mind them eating whatever they wanted to in the yard, except for the tick aspect. After all, the Lyme of Lyme disease fame is only two miles away from here.

So, what did you do with the candy-stealer? Smack him on the nose?

16. I was too scared to move..he grabbed the candy and stood there eating it
wrapper and all as DH pulled me away. Kids loved it..worried me though that it would get that close to humans.

Lyme disease is a scary thought. I see you've had it. You've recovered ok? I've heard it can get pretty serious.

17. It's pretty bizarre. It can mimic malaria and / or arthritis and / or
a whole bunch of other things. I really thought the malaria was coming back, even though it doesn't do that after that long. Then I and the doctor both thought the MS had come out of remission (which, fortunately, it has not).

I thought I was going to die, I really did. Updated my will and everything.

But three weeks of intense antibiotics and it went away. For now, at least. It's tricky stuff. Good thing I've been smart enough over the years to stay away from antibiotics as a general thing; it helps a lot if you've done that.

22. OMG Redstone..I'm glad it's gone
and hope it stays gone...not just the Lyme disease but the other two as well. That had to be really frightening. I'm glad you're doing ok.

Overuse of antibiotics is a pretty common occurance..that's wise that you were careful of its use. I used to argue with my Dr. years ago when he insisted I take a massive dose of penicillin every time I had my teeth cleaned due to a suspected floppy heart valve. Last time I discussed it with him he admitted that the more you use it, that it can become less effective.

23. Um, about that antibiotic premed before dental appointments...
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 07:15 PM by Shakespeare
That's not something to take lightly. My husband has a heart defect like the one you describe, and has always been prescribed a prophylactic dose of penicillin before any invasive dental work (as per the American Heart Association's standard of care guidelines). That includes your basic teeth cleaning. A year and a half ago, his new dentist blew him off after repeated requests for a prescription. He is now recovering from a near-fatal heart infection (caused by bacteria picked up during the dental work) that culminated in a blood clot (a piece of his infected aortic valve breaking off), resultant embollectomy and then nine-plus hours of open-heart surgery to rebuild his severely damaged heart. He was in ICU for three weeks, and on heavy-dose IV antibiotics at home for six more weeks. He shouldn't have survived it, and his doctors are amazed he's alive today.

Please...take that premed. The one dose before a dental appointment is not enough to build a resistance to it.

28. Oh..I do understand..it's just that they only suspected
I had MVP due to one Dr. out of about 20 that could hear a slight click and a holter monitor reading of a rapid heart beat..but hey I was 25, working 60 hrs a week with 3 kids and running myself silly. Nothing showed up on an EKG or on the echo back then and about 5 yrs ago I had a heart cath and they didn't find it then either.

They have lessoned the dosage IIRC. After the last discussion with my Dr., he agreed it wasn't necessary for me to take it any longer. I used to have to take 4 horsepills before hand and two after. It was a large amount..enough to kill any bacteria in your body before the dental work and enough to kill any that may have entered the blood stream during. Twice a year combined with bouts of sinus infections/and or bronchitis each year and I had more antibiotics than I care to remember. I've also dealt with a hospitalization for a severe infection from a bite because regular antibiotics didn't work for me. I then had to be on the strongest and newest IV antibiotic for two more weeks at home...and that was long before it became widely known about resistance. I was told if that hadn't worked or had been a year earlier(before the new antibiotic), I would have lost my arm.

I'm sorry to hear your husband had such a serious illness. I'm glad he's recovering and I hope you sued the Dentist. My dentists were always excellent with making sure I had the meds.

 and thank you for your concern about me taking the meds.

Woke up on Day 2 (yesterday) feeling great! It's been a real test of my self-discipline, having to do the meal prep thing for the kids...but I'm mananging and am determined.
