Question for restaurant/bar customers...

As a waitress sometimes I feel uncomfortable interrupting conversations to ask "Would you like another drink?" or "How is everything?" But at the same time I don't want my customers to think I'm ignoring them.

What say y'all? Should I interrupt you or let you eat/drink in peace?

Can I get you another drink? :beer:

1. I think asking is fine

If I'm at a restaurant I don't expect to have uninterrupted conversation, nor conversations of a very personal nature. Asking is just good service and part of your job. Go ahead!

3. It's okay to interrupt.

Half the time, I wanted another one, but the bartender/waitress was busy. Then, I get engrossed in conversation. I have no issues with a brief interruption asking me if I need anything. Neither do most of my friends.

I hate that, it's almost like you time it so we can't say anything negative even if we wanted to

6. Being interrupted pisses me off if I'm talking....

If I'm talking, wait one second, I'll finish and look at you. Then you can ask. There was one girl who kept interrupting me on one of my first dates with Skip. She didn't get a tip.

except as DS1 said, when they're chewing on something.

I don't cook, so I eat out several times a week, and I appreciate good service. I also make it a point to tip VERY VERY well for exceptional service (50% is not uncommon for me), and I don't mind an interruption.

That and I usually dine alone, too, so a little conversation is quite alright with me. :D

There have been many more times when I've been looking in vain for another drink than there have been times when I was annoyed at an iterruption.

I suppose I'd prefer a brief wait to let me finish the point I'm making, or perhaps just a few second 'hover' with eye contact so I can speak up if I want anything, but too much attention is nearly always preferable to too little...
