Yet another politician (D) goes after video games...
Let's not focus on the real, brutal violence being perpetrated by the Bush junta in Iraq, no, WHAT ARE KIDS SEEING IN VIDEO GAMES??

http://www.gamespy.com/bizbuzz/december03/bizbuzz95/

Scroll down a bit to "Games & Killing I"

Yet another politician is looking to create a law restricting the sale of violent video games to kids. California Assemblyman Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) proposed legislation that "will expand the definition of 'harmful matter to children' to include video games that visually depict serious injury to human beings in a manner that is especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel." He also noted that he's introducing a second piece of legislation that would require retailers "to display Mature-rated games out of eye-level view of small children and separate from all other games."

Now, everyone, take a deep breath, and repeat after me:

VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.
VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.
VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.
VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.
VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.
VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT REAL. THEY ARE FANTASY.

Now, if you are still having trouble discerning the difference, by all means, please go see a therapist.

13. Well...
That's not really fair. Parents are working more than they ever have in the past, and for less. They don't have as much time to spend with their kids.

15. It's not too hard...
the games have a rating on them, such as "T" for teen, "M" for mature, and so on. It's very easy to spot and requires no time to spend w/ kids.

That excuse is pretty weak, no offense.

9. I like how this "gang" in Oakland
that he mentions in the article said they got "tactical training" for carjacking and such by playing GTA.

How is it tactical again? Do you carjack by running up to a car and pressing the analog stick left while hitting R1?

Although the real violence be perpetrated by the U.S. government is infinitely more important, I do believe that violent TV and video games have a deleterious effect on very young children. Yes, a 16-year-old knows the difference between reality and fantasy. A 3-year-old doesn't. True, they don't typically play violent video games -- but they are around others who do, and that's just as bad. They also help tp perpetuate the violence of American culture.

If I ever have kids, I'll get rid of my TV. I wouldn't want them watching it until at least age 5.

16. I have a hard time believing
that 3 and 5 year olds are playing excessively violent games. At any rate, why would the parents be allowing this? Isn't it their job to take care of these things, not the government's?

If you don't want young children to see violent TV and violent video games, don't let them watch them. Period. Let's stop with the unfunded mandates already.

18. Reread my post.
I said that 3-year-olds generally don't play violent video games, but they are exposed to them by others. And they do watch violent movies.

17. Current batch of NeoCons are probably too young to remember
but who was sitting right next to Tipper Gore, going right after the record industry wanting labels on albums, being the co-conspirator in the whole "Mothers Against Violent Lyrics" or whatever?

Lynn Cheney - The Other Mrs. VP.

20. Of all the things to focus on
They have to pick THIS.

There is nothing to the issue, as long as games are rated (they are). Parents should be responsible enough to be able to see what video games their kids buy or own.
