I visited her back in '03. The invasion of Iraq started during the flight, and two hours after the plane landed, the massive protest began.

I followed the huge crowd to the U.S. embassy. I was interviewed by about a dozen journalists and then an Iraqi woman interrupted to give me a big hug so I had to stop because I was crying too hard to speak. A nice French lady shooed them off and comforted me, saying, "Oh, you must be artiste..."

Then I started drinking wine, and stayed drunk for two weeks. My visit with sis and her nice bourgeois family was very brief, but she understood and didn't get mad or anything.

Also, I once had a roommate who hailed from Paris, Tennessee.

18. Had an interesting experience at De Gaulle Airport 10 years back

My mom and I had done a D-Day tour. I was working on my Masters in Military History so it was right up my alley, so to speak, and mom had worked for both Bundles for Britain and the airplane designer Alexander de Seversky in New York City during the war and had met a number of the top Army Air Corps people, so she had an interest. We started in England and then went over to Normandy, finishing up in Paris. The day we were leaving to come home, we went out to De Gaulle and it was a mob scene in the departure terminal. People all over, long lines and a really poor pa system so that hearing the announcements was difficult. Anyway, mom and I were on line to check in, ditch the luggage and get our seat assignments when an announcement was made. I don't speak French, but I speak some Spanish, so I caught the jist of it, which was that everybody had to leave the terminal immediately. People began pouring out onto the sidewalks and the roadway in front of the terminal. Mom and I were, because we had been at the back of the terminal about to check in, one of the last people to get out. It was chaos - no police or officials to direct anyone. Traffic, including tour buses were still coming up the roadway and driving through the crowds of people. Mom and I were right up against the glass windows of the terminal, pressed against them by the crowd, when several police carrying equipment boxes and bags pushed their way through the herd of people and went in to the terminal. A couple of minutes later the people to our left who could see more of what they were doing turned around and covered their ears while yelling in French. I caught the word 'bomb' and 'explosives', so I told mom to immediately turn away from the glass windows we were pressed against and cover her ears. We did and no sooner had we done so when there was an explosion inside the terminal. I could feel the glass of the window shaking. A few minutes later the police left and airport security finally showed up to tell us it was ok for us to come back in. When we checked in we asked the counter person what the story was. He told us that someone had spotted an unattended bag, so the bomb squad had been called in to detonate it. Turned out of course to be some poor slob's dirty clothes. What I wanted to know was how in the seething mass of humanity and their luggage that had inhabited the terminal anyone had been able to identify an unattended bag. I was less than impressed with the way the whole thing had been handled. But hey, it gave me an interesting finish to an interesting trip.

we stayed in a very small, quaint hotel, that was super cheap but fantastic, and had a great time. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

30. Yes, in 1986

Paris was targeted by terrorists then, and personal freedoms were not lost. (it was only a couple of weeks after I left, and a short block away from where I stayed, that a bomb went off, killing a couple of people)

It was beautiful...springtime. Paris is magical. The food was amazing, and the sights even more so.

I don't think I appreciated it as much at the time (I didn't spend enough time in London, and then after Paris was off to Nice and Switzerland), but it was a great trip. :loveya:

Went on a Eurail tour after taking an advancement exam. Paris may be great in April, but, it is also beautiful in September. I would love to have the opportunity to go again. This time, I'll include my husband.

I wasn't really planning on visiting Paris, but ended up there. Met a bunch of cool folk outside the Beaubourg. Before I went travelling (turned into a 4 year trip - another story) I had read "Is Paris Burning?". As I walked around, I kept noticing things mentioned in the book.
