Nominations for Best English Band here, please.
I need 9 choices for best English band. There are so many, we'll have to try to get a consensus, or you guys nominate and I'll ignore you and put up 9 indie bands you've never heard of.

I assume you mean current bands---not "classic rock" bands? Or maybe I'm mistaken. Do tell.

We can do a Stones/Beatles poll, but if you put those two in, no one else stands a chance.

34. Yeah, i Guess That's Smart
The Beatles are the only viable answer. Anyone who doesn't think they are the greatest British band isn't paying enough attention. None of the other bands mentioned on this thread would have ever been heard in America if not for the Beatles.

So, they get moved to Legend Emeritus status, and they can't be voted upon.

That's probably best.

Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 02:58 PM by jpgray
The Kinks deserve an honorable mention, for WATVGPS and Arthur, etc. Pink Floyd because of their innovative early period, the Rolling Stones and Beatles even though I never put them on anymore. Hmm. Soft Machine...

CARAVAN! How could I forget Caravan? They should be included.

King Crimson and early Genesis if you're a prog nerd :barf:

If you want to count Hendrix or the Sparks as "English", throw 'em in.

The Zombies deserve a mention, probably.

Throw in the Police, because they did some nice things. Roxy Music as well, for the Enoness (i.e. poor man's krautrock)...

There are just too many--you want the well-known stuff, right? I have plenty of indie favorites no one cares about. :)

38. split it into decades?
Maybe. Still, this is a crazy-ass poll! Because it's going to be over in about an hour, right? I mean I dig it and all but---having replied before, I now have to also mention Bowie and Roxy Music as great, great, crucial English rock. And decade-divisions don't really work, frankly. Led Zep's second album replaced the Fab Four's Abbey Road at the top of the charts in '69, but the Beatles were obviously the biggest UK band of that decade. Based on record sales and fan support (from the likes of me) Zeppelin ruled the '70s. But Roxy, despite being under the radar in the '70s, had SUCH a major impact on the music to come, and OH YEAH---Queen. Their first four albums were stunning. "Queen II" is one of the strangest, most provocative albums ever released. Bottom line: There's so much great Brit rock. Wow, I almost forgot Genesis (the Gabriel years) and King Crimson. Genius stuff. And Fairport Convention.

In that order. Another half-hour and I'd give you a bunch more but Zeppelin will always be number 1.
