Fire forces evacuation of apartment building

Firefighters early this morning were continuing to investigate after a smoky fire Thursday night forced the evacuation of the Mayflower Apartments at 602 W. Fifth St. in Joplin.

At least three residents sought hospital treatment after the alarm at the six-story building came about 9:30 p.m. Two firefighters went to the hospital suffering from dehydration, authorities said.

Firemen at 11 p.m. were still working to bring residents down from the fourth and fifth floors via fire escapes on the outside of the building.

Netta Galardo, apartment building manager, said the firemen were bringing each of the rescued residents to her for verification, and that almost 100 percent of the residents had been accounted for shortly after 11 p.m.

I am suffering smoke injuries to my lungs. My apartment suffered no damage. But because of the damage to the building I can't stay there. Looks as if I have to fing a new place to live. :cry: That was My Home.

back in '84 a fire destroyed my apt building while I was at work; although the actual fire never touched my apt the smoke and water damage made me throw away almost everything I had

Once there's a determination on the fire's cause you should be able to go back in. I certainly hope the fire alarm worked properly.

14. All they said was that we could put us up in a church bassment for the...

weekend. We have to fend for ourselves after that due to some of the county laws here about residents not being allowed hotel/motel rooms within so many miles of there home.
