Maybe he's auditioning for the Vienna Boys' Choir. (I'm not kidding.)

Europe has a long tradition of boy sopranos singing very complex music, due to the Catholic Church's former prohibition on women singing in church.

I'm currently singing in a cathedral choir as a second soprano, and it's humbling to think that so much of our repertoire was writtten to be sung by 8-year-old boys.

I know you were responding to the discussion of young male choirs, but there's an unintentional ambiguity in your response, since it follows the post about boys with good voices growing up to be castrati, and the very next line is "That's still the case in England too." That said, I'm going to go dig out some opera CDs, given that the original thread topic gave me a craving. I much prefer listening to adult singers and only go for boy choirs in small doses. They're generally too hooty for my taste, and besides, I reject the tradition of excluding female singers.

22. The "Queen Of The Night" aria as depicted in the movie "Amadeus"

is extraordinary! The person portraying the Queen is not the person singing, but they are able to get the best of both worlds with a lovely actress and an astonishing soprano. It is sung in an English translation to represent the fact that the German audience was hearing it in their native language. At the end, fireworks explode to represent the Queen's wrath.

When my step-daughter saw that scene, she said: "That's opera? COOL!"
