Former Dodger Steve Howe killed in car crash

Breaking news... fell asleep at the wheel on the way back from Arizona,and rolled over in his truck. :cry:

He had a lot of problems, and a lot of demons, but he was a decent guy. His once promising career self-destructed, but he managed to pull it together and was enjoying some success with his recent business ventures. He died too soon, at age 48.

5. One of the great relievers

The Dodgers churned out some serious pitchers in the late 70's/early 80's. 17 saves made him NL Rookie of the Year in 1980. Rick Sutcliffe won that same award in 1979 as a Dodger, and Fernando Valenzuela in '81. What a run of rookies... may never see that happen with one team again.

7. It's an easy thing to deduce

When a vehicle rolls over with no apparent road hazards in sight, and no telltale skid marks, falling asleep is usually the first likely cause. Falling asleep at the wheel is a major cause of highway deaths.

Anyone with law enforcement, highway safety, or auto insurance investigation experience knows this.

They'd know...otherwise it's all reconstruction. Lots of inconsistencies like that and some of 'em make me crazy.

There's a movie out...that horror flick...somewhere in it they say,

"Last seen in the abandoned town." or "...deserted town."

Ummmmmm...if the town is abandoned or deserted, it's assumed that there isn't anyone there. And if there's no one in the town, just who were they seen BY?

9. I had a photo of Howe in Baseball America

I think it was in 1986. He'd been suspended by MLB for like the fourth time and was trying to mount another comeback with the minor league club in my hometown. BA was doing a story on him and contracted with me for the photo through the front office. (I did a lot of PR photography for the club.)

I got a shot of him in the dugout in which he looked positively angelic. But in the harsher light of the clubhouse, you could see what cocaine had done to him. His face was lined and he talked a mile a minute, with "fuck" about every third word. I wondered if he was as clean as he professed to be.

A tragic life, made all the more tragic by the fact that he had the stuff to be one of the best relievers ever.
