moving to spokane, washington

hi fellow DUers,

i currently live in dayton,oh. my girlfriend got a job offer in spokane, washington and i'll soon be moving up there with her. what should i expect there? i'm worried about moving to a new area and don't know what to expect. currently i suffer from sinus problems because dayton doesn't have good air quality. will i get a break in spokane? i'm just curious.

1. Eastern Washington is dry, agriculture is really big there.

Not to far from really scenic areas of northern Idaho and Montana though.

I think the air in Eastern WA is pretty clean actually. It's in the red area of the state and right next to Idaho. You'll be close to skiing and Lake Cour d'Alene. Spokane is not a hotbed of activity but it has Gonzaga University. :shrug: (Bing Crosby's alma mater)

Housing prices are still fairly reasonable for the state. All in all it's not a terrible place. But it is a good 6 hour drive to Seattle and real civilization.

i appreciate your responses. we will soon be looking for places to rent. i was thinking of renting a house. are there any particular areas to look for? i am really looking forward to getting out of dayton. :)

6. I live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Just 30 minutes away.

The air is dry, but clean (most of the time). There is a lot of farming, and they burn the fields every year, which causes problems for some people. I don't know how much the field burning affects Spokane though.

You may check out places in Liberty Lake, which is about 15 miles from Spokane (it's between Spokane and Coeur d'Alene). It'll be a bit of a commute, but you may find it more appealing than living in Spokane. I've lived in both Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake, and much preferred Liberty Lake. It's small, and clean, but doesn't have all of the conveniences of living in Spokane.

7. spokane is not a nice city at all.

I dislike Spokane a great deal. The "downtown area" is blighted, and there is a great deal of poverty in the area. There's very little diversity, and transportation is poor.

The suburbs can be okay. Spokane Valley is just like any other suburb and is less depressing than Spokane proper. You'll have to work hard to find things to do.

There are few (but very good) places to hang out - try Okane if you like sushi. Also, beware of living near the train tracks.

The air quality varies a great deal, but is probably better than Dayton.
