I had the German in my sight. He was only 15 yards or so away, walking slowly and leisurely across the underbrush. I steadied my hand and squeezed the trigger. The shot rang out, and the rifle kicked back into my shoulder. The bullet hit the German in the leg, and he collapsed to the ground screaming in pain. I lowered my rifle - no sense in making things worse.

The bullet size is the same, but the cartridge holds more powder and is much bigger, so it won't chamber in a standard .30 cal.

which is a straight-walled, relatively low-powered round that has more in common with a pistol cartridges than rifle cartridges; it looks sort of like a scaled-down .357 magnum round, minus the case rim. The M1 Carbine was chambered for that round and can be thought of as an early and successful attempt at an intermediate-caliber PDW.

You are correct that .308 and .30-06 are .30 caliber cartridges, in that the bore diameter is approximately 0.30 inches (.308 to be exact). 7.62x39mm and 7.62x54mm (both .311), .300 Winchester Magnum, etc. are also .30 caliber cartridges in the generic sense.

There were actually other M1's; there was the M1 carbine, the M1 rifle (Garand), the M1 submachinegun (Thompson), M1 tank, etc. Each category has its own series of M-numbers, and carbines and rifles are in separate categories.

28. That's not 'standard issue', that's the M1 carbine.

30. They're still in active service, if you can believe that!

The Canadian Forces still use them in small numbers in the extreme North, and the aboriginal Rangers prefer them to semi-auto FN or the C7 (M-16 clone), because of their simplicity, and their reliability in extreme climate conditions.

Plus you can sleep with one in your sleeping bag to prevent it freezing (as is Forces practice with all firearms), and you don't have to worry about the breach snapping shut on your doodle in the middle of the night!

back in 1967 at Fort Gordan GA. We arrived at a funeral after traveling several hours and found our NCO had forgotten either our ammo or M 14's, I don't remember now, so we had to go to the local American Legion or VFW and barrow their M1's and Ammo.

The guy I go shooting with is a movie/tv armourer/propsmaster, so most of his firearms are police or military. He has hunting rifles, of course, but they're the typical .303, Mini-14, and dad's bolt-action type.

As far as the stamped crap.... even being stamped and "lightweight", it's 27lbs!

When I did a stint in an armory, a few seal team members were cross-training with our recon snipers, and they were using both the Barrett and the McMillan. People say the recoil on the Barrett is bad, imagine a bolt-action version. The scope on that thing was in-fookin-credible, I was watching fire-ants do their thing on a drainpipe about 600 yards away.

a 30-06 rifle, a 30-30 rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun. I shot the 12 gauge when I weighed about 120 pounds (I am over 6 feet tall) and it damn near knocked me over.

they do kick, and you have to watch out for the bolt catching your thumb when loading a clip.

way over-powered from my perspective of battlefield calibers; but i "listened" intently to che. a dead soldier is dead, but a wounded soldier ties up resources and a wounded/maimed soldier on the home-front is a morale-breaker.


5.56 mm is plenty of firepower, & you can carry bunches more of them.
