I'd like recommendations for good non-commercial music.

I will admit without shame that I am most familiar with commercial, played-on-the-radio type music. However, I realize I'm missing out on a lot of good stuff, and I'd like to broaden my horizons. I'm pretty wide open as far as genre goes.

5. Over here all we keep hearing about is the Arctic Monkeys

they rose to prominence despite not being signed by a major label; instead they distribute their tunes on the internet. They still needed a mention on the radio to get their lucky break though.

10. There are several avenues I guess

depending on your budget. You can get satellite radio, or broadband, and hook uo with all sorts of new (and older, non commercial) music.

It really depends on your tastes as well. As recent lounge music threads can attest, there is no accounting for ones' tastes in music.

One thing you might consider: Paste magazine, which is bi-monthly and covers alot of out-of-the-mainstream indie music (indie labels of all sorts of genres) Each issue comes with a sampler CD.

The non-commercial genres I like are AltCountry (thats Old 97's and Rhett Miller , as mentioned above), Americana, which is sort of the same, IndieRock, or Reggae

Or you could any music festivals through the country this summer, like Bonnaroo or Summerfest

15. Look for used stuff on Amazon

much cheaper way of buying CDs. Just search for a CD then click on used to see whta's available. Also look at ebay occasionally.

Mostly I go to a local record shop called Record and Tape Traders, which I like because you can trade in used CDs for other used CDs, and they have a lot of underground sort of music.

Mike is a guitarist/pianist/vocalist/composer extrordenaire...

played with Zappa's band (and it shows in his music) but he also sounds like Todd or XTC... but most importantly he sounds like Mike Keneally. Flat-out brilliant.

Listen to "Radio Keneally" for at least half an hour and you'll be as convinced as i am that there are very few composers in his league. And his guitar playing is second to none. Andy Partridge of XTC says "Mike Keneally's playing just makes me wanna spit!"

14. You are American

so don't do what the great majority of your population have done by ignoring your own musical heritage. Try looking for Old Time American Traditional Music, 1930's swing music and 1940's black R&B with the original words before they were cleaned for puritanical whities.

If you've time to listen to abbreviated music clips then go into www.jpc.de which is a German CD etc sales site. No need to buy - just listen. Click on the flag to get into english and then search away. If you enter a few words of a song title it will give you all known recodings containing those words in a song title or if you enter and artist name it will list out all of their available CDs whatever.

If you want some clues as to who or what to look for then just ask.

16. Oh I wouldn't.

I'm already familiar with a lot of 1940's R&B, and have been thinking lately about 1930's swing. Newer stuff as well. I've recently met a few people who are in bands so I'm doing more to check out local music.

I'd also like to try out music from other places. I just gave a listen to the Arctic Monkeys that billyskank recommended above and I like it. I'm keeping my options as open as possible at the moment.
