I broke my arm last night!
I was standing onna stool and I slipped off (DOH!) and four hours and 1 emergency room trip later..... I have my first broken bone in my entire life! Now my daughter and husband live under my command! It hurts so badddd the pain pills don't help, and they also make me itch, dangit! To those who have been down this pain filled road before, I realize it will take 6 to 8 weeks to heal, but when will the hurt stop?! And how do you wash your hair? My daughter says she should wash it.....

(Note: I, LuvAmericaHateBushs daughter is writing this. Like you could'nt tell.... And I call myself MINIluvamericaHatBush(A.K.A Tayonya on AnimeMetro.)

So any joe who has been down the oh so painfull road of broken bones, give me tips, hints, and survival tricks (And see if I could become a poet) PLEASE!!!!!!

ON TOPIC.. I just listened to 2 local radio news reports on Janklow.
Let's all guess how many times they used the word "republican"?

1. good luck!
the pain will go away in a couple days. It's best to keep your family in the dark regarding the alleviation of pain, because you want to get 1st class service for as long as possible. All you need to do is start seeing the benefits of broken bones - 1) you are waited on hand and foot 2) your bone will grow back stronger.

2. Ouch! Sorry to hear!
I was really little when I broke my arm, so I don't remember how long it took to stop hurting - plus, each break is different. I broke my ankle about 3 years ago and that hurt for a long time, but I was putting some weight on it so that probably isn't a good comparison either (unless you're doing handstands). :D

Though I will not endorse this, I will say that :smoke: was the only thing that got rid of the pain in my ankle.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

9. Oh yeah.
:smoke: did help. Also, my pain meds killed my appetite and made me sick to my stomach, so smoking a little helped me get at least one meal down each day.

5. Pain should ease soon
Are you using heating pad? Ice packs? Is your arm elevated? You didn't say which bone in your arm? Radius, ulna, humerus?
You should use Ice packs for first 24 to 48 hours. Makes the blood vessels smaller keeps the blood away from the site. After that use heat to dissolve the swelling.
What are you taking for pain? If it makes you itch STOP Call your doc and get another prescription.:hi:

6. forgot about the hair washing
Need to know where the cast splint is...also how dirty your hair is?
If it isn't to the point where you can't stand it. Leave it.
If you have a lower arm cast, put plastic bag over your arm, tape the top of it with masking tape...make it water proof and take a shower. You could probably do the same if it is full arm cast. But you could lean over sink and let your daughter do the scrubbing and rinsing.:hi:

Dwelling on the pain is the worst thing you can possibly do.

On the other hand, they say laughter is the best medicine; they're right, IMO.

As for the Janklow one... I say 0 times.

8. OOH. I'm so sorry!
And I have bad news. It's probably going to hurt for a long time. My breaks were over 4 months ago and I still have serious pain almost all the time.

It SUCKS having a cast. What saved me was reading very easy to read fantasy books, books that could take me right out of the world with very little effort.

DO let your husband and daughter help you as much as possible. You deserve it.

What pain pills are you on? I was on a bunch of stuff. Roxicet (something like that) worked best for me. Oxocodone gave me hallucinations and nightmares.

10. OwOwOw...Sorry
Elevate the limb. I have broken both arms once, all fingers at least once, cheek, hand, foot...it hurts for a few days. It also depends on the type of break.

True breaks take longer. Hairlines and wrinkles heal quickly.

Feel better soon

Later,
JM

12. Hey, thanks a lot
The break was at or on my elbow. ow. I have an appointment at a specialist twomrrrow, first I have to stop at the hospital and pick up my X-rays. The pain medication I'm taking is Oxycodone (Oxymoron?). I'm wondering if that's the same medicine that got Rush boy into trouble. Mabey I could call his show and ask if he wants my leftovers, or what the side efects are.

About Janklow, the answer is of course (Drumroll please) ZERO!!!!! Now, if he had been a DEMOCRAT, they would have used it as an offical title.

(Note: MiniLuvamericahatebush is still typing.)

13. Easy shampooing

Should tide you over until you're steady enough for a shower or leaning over a sink. Pain meds can make either proposition dicey, so don't push your luck.

There's always the beauty shop. They're willing to limit their services to a shampoo and towel dry if that's all you need.

So sorry about the mishap. Besides the pain (and who needs that) there's the problem of staying warm in cold weather. Coats don't always fit well over casts.

Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon.

14. Where is your break?
You will experience pain in the joints above and below the break. If you are itching, call the doctor. You will need a change in pain meds.

Plan on doing nothing for a few days. Let your family help out. Make an appointment at a local beauty shop and get your hair done there. You deserve to feel good about yourself. After a week or so, you will learn how to cope with hair washing. Right now, pamper yourself!!!!!!!!

If you are in a cast, lucky you. My break was just below the elbow. My brilliant surgeon thought it would be better if I stayed in the splint that the medic at the hospital put on. The bone did not heal properly and I can't fully extend my arm. It's not a problem except I can't throw straight. I went into physical therapy one week after my accident. The PT's were great, but it hurt really bad when they would take my arm out of the splint to do exercises. Casts are good. Splints bad.

Keep your fingers moving. Are they swollen? Ice them and move them. I know it is going to hurt like heck, but it will pay off in the end.

Just to give you a chuckle, I saved this for last. I tripped over a speed bump.

15. WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!
Sorry about the broken arm, but if the pain pills are making you itch, it may be an allergic reaction...You need to contact your doctor and ask if you should keep taking them.
I've broken 6 bones in my life, but don't really remember any pain after the things were set.
I hope you don't require surgery. take care.
