Photoshop & graphics experts, a question
Does anyone know how to make this type of pattern in Photoshop or GIMP or whatever?

I'm wondering if there's a plug-in effect that can do it automatically. Or maybe a tutorial on the web that explains how to do it by hand. One problem is I don't know what to call the pattern (I would do a web search if I knew the name for it); I've seen it on old b/w photos, I'd like to duplicate that retro look.

1. It's called halftone
Should be a filter in photoshop that does it.

3. Yes, very easily.
I just used Kai's Power Tools 7 (Effects) Gradient Lab to produce the horizontal gradient from white to dark gray. Then I used the native Photoshop Sketch - Halftone Pattern using the Dot pattern, adjusting the size of the dots with the slider.

The KPT filter is not freeware. I'm sure the gradient effect can be produced in other ways.
