I refuse to use IE
I have an account with Yahoo mail, so I opened a new mail from Yahoo, inviting me to take a "sneak preview" of its new homepage.

But when I try, I am getting a message that "unfortunately, I am using a browser that "we" do not support today."

Which browser? I tried Mozilla, Firefox and Safari. What's left? The one that I do not use, except to test pages that, yes, would not load otherwise.

Buh bye, Yahoo. Call me when you are willing to use other browsers, besides the gorilla.

8. Firefox on XP and OS X works. Safari does not.
I haven't got Camino but since it is based on Firefox it probably works as well.

I am referring specifically to the beta version of Yahoo Mail. I've been using it for at least 6 months. It's decent but can be buggy.

14. OK, it says Firefox 1.5, mine is 1.0.7
Edited on Tue May-16-06 04:11 PM by question everything
The question now is whether Firefox 1.5 will work with OS 10.2.8 or whether I need the 10.3.

On edit. Downloaded 1.5 and it is working now. Thanks for your help

BTW, If you are using OSX, try Shiira.

Edited on Tue May-16-06 04:40 PM by high density
Yahoo! mail works fine for me in Mozilla 1.7.13 on Windows and Linux.

(Update) Yahoo sneak preview in Mozilla:

"We plan to support additional browser versions soon." There must be some reason why they're allowing Firefox 1.5 but denying Mozilla.

Many people have told me I'm bat-shit crazy for that reason.

You've got me on the Ruling Class biz (fine Peter Barnes/Peter O'Toole film, by the way). But I do have to ask -- are you suggesting that there are no viruses or worms in the Mac and Linux universes? Or that the browsers you cite in your original post are similarly immune?

25. Is There a Virus Threat for Macs?
Yes, Mac and Linux are immune. Probably has nothing to do with the browsers except that IE is associated with Windows and with Microsoft and we, loyal Macusers (have been since 1987) do not like Microsoft :evilfrown:

Here is a recent column on this topic:

The Wall Street Journal

MOSSBERG'S MAILBOX
By WALTER S. MOSSBERG

Is There a Virus Threat for Macs?
May 11, 2006; Page B4

Q: There's been a lot of press lately about increased virus activity on the Macintosh platform. Should Mac owners now be running the same kinds of security software that Windows owners use?

A: There is no sudden security crisis on the Apple Macintosh platform. In fact, for average Mac users, there isn't a security threat of any significance, at least not yet. It is laughable to compare the real, massive and burdensome security problems on Windows with the largely theoretical security problem on the Mac. As I have said in the past, no operating system is invulnerable to attack, including Apple's Mac OS X operating system, which powers Macintosh computers. It is possible to write malicious software for the Mac, including viruses and spyware, and it is possible for this software to spread in the wild, infecting many Macs.

However, despite what you may have heard, this hasn't happened to any degree that matters, yet. As of today, there have been exactly two documented, successful pieces of malicious software -- viruses, trojan horses, worms -- that affected users of the Mac OS X operating system, since it was released in 2001. And these two failed to spread much, affecting probably a few dozen people, and doing no harm. I expect there to be a small number of additional Mac viruses this year.

(snip)

Security firms are saying that the discovery of these vulnerabilities in the Mac has increased sharply lately. They say that based on past patterns, this should yield a sharp increase in the number of Mac viruses in coming years. But even a "sharp" increase could well mean under 50 viruses by 2008. So my advice to Mac users is that at the moment, I see no reason to buy and run security software, which is in itself costly and can degrade your computing experience. But you should make up your own mind, based on your tolerance for risk.

(snip)

There is one exception: If you are running Windows on one of the new Intel Macs, you are just like a Windows user, and you must run Windows security programs when using Windows.

32. No, Mac & Linux are NOT immune
they just have a smaller share of the market, and therefore there aren't as many reports on their vulnerabilities.

If you machine is hooked up to a network (ANY network) or if it uses removable media, you are susceptable to virii, worms and/or hackers-- regardless of the OS (Windows, Unix, Amiga, whatever).

BTW, you DO know that the first worm was created and ran on Unix workstations, right?

If it weren't for that I'd have no use for it.

I never did use it very much anyhow. Used Netscape for years and then went to Mozilla Suite a while back.

28. You don't even need it for that.
There's a third-party web site that has a Windows Update-style browser plugin for Firefox. It does the same thing Windows Update does--scans your machine, looks for updates, and downloads and installs them. I've been using it for a year or so on three machines at home with no problems.

You can check it out here.

And I'll add to the main thread here that anyone who uses Outlook is just begging for trouble. It is by far the preferred target of spammers and hackers.

27. Make Firefox report itself as IE
You can install the Firefox extension "PrefBar" which has the ability to change the user agent for your web browser. I was not able to access the web page indicated without the same warning/error. When I changed the user agent to "IE 6.0 WinXP", the page loaded up just fine.

You can get PrefBar here:
http://prefbar.mozdev.org/

After installing the extension and restarting Firefox, you will get a new toolbar (toggled with F8) that conveniently make multiple configuration options available. You can change the user agent from a drop down list.

The web page for PrefBar indicates that it works on Firefox 1.0+, but after checking the installation configuration file for the extension I see that it should install on version 1.5+ as well. I use PrefBar on the 3.0 alpha nightly builds and it works fine.

Hope this helps.

33. Or get IETab
It runs an instance of IE inside of Mozilla/Firefox. All you do is click an icon on the status bar, and you've got IE. I use it for testing all the time.

But of course Opera is better than both of those.
