Ouch....That's got to fucking hurt for Barbaro--he broke through the gates early, then was pulled up in the actual race with a twisted right hind hock.

Bernardini wins by 6 lengths over Sweetnorthernsaint.

of his being pulled up and it looked like that hoof was almost dangling. I don't give a heck if he ever races again, I want him just to live.

I know the top racers are treated very well but many, many more wind up in rural "claiming" stakes and are abused and wind up in slaughterhouses - even thoroughbreds. Oh, I hate hunting and fishing, too! Basically I want to end suffering everywhere I can. I even save worms from the middle of the sidewalk.

looks like an ankle one...in the head on replay, the pastern was all over the place. Sesamoid, perhaps?

Prado did a great job...as did Matz, he's obviously put a lot into the horse...he pulled up like a showjumper, not a race horse.

I've been listening and trying to find that out. It's like the vet on TV explained, if this injury happened to a human, we'd be in bed for 6 weeks. That's tough to do with a horse.

Doubt he will race again. If he can't be put to stud, he is now just a very expensive pet, IF they can heal the breaks.

Anybody see the movie Dreamer? It was a real feel good thing and there was a horse that did recover from a bad break to race again. Don't think it is common.

Such injuries usually end up in the beautiful beast gets put down. :cry:

and also the pastern. He is a colt so they will do everything to save him.

Dr. Bramledge is the best bone surgeon in the business.

who got air time and literally threw in

" we hope Barbaro is OK"

" we're sorry about Barbaro", etc.

OK- most of them ( I hope) meant it but hell

a number of them were just paying lip service!!

They don't give a flying Friggin Damn about Barbaro
and you could hear it- it took less that a second to
" offer condolences"- all they cared about was their
damn winnings and standings.

They didn't want to sound like assholes,
but they did, anyway.

33. Yep, it's all about the fame and money

I had to quit watching.

I got sick of listening to them (especially the announcer woman on the horse after the race) say how sad it was for Barbaro, "but that's horse racing."

Maybe they should look into racing mechanical horses, then they wouldn't have to be bothered with trivial things, like creatures that suffer pain and injuries and need care. :grr:

Yeah, just like football, except that the injured may end up euthanized or at the slaughterhouse.

Barbaro Taken to New Bolton Center

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who suffered multiple fractures soon after the start of the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), was taken to the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Penn., where it is expected that he will undergo surgery.

His injury is career-ending and life-threatening. Barbaro left Pimlico at 7:22 p.m. (EDT) and arrived at the New Bolton Center shortly after 9 p.m.

The transport from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore to Pennsylvania was shown live on WBAL-TV.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner stumbled and dropped behind the nine-horse Preakness field before being pulled up by jockey Edgar Prado in front of the clubhouse. Barbaro had broken through the gate before the race officially started.
