42. Just as a small aside...
it got the nick "Garden State" from the huge numbers of small truck farms that used to be here.

Some still are. We even have a few dairy farms left.

11. Got stranded in newark once
on my back from sailing from Martinique to Antgua. Plane was late and missed my connection back to fly-over land. They put me up in a hotel... 30 minutes of freeways and mostly run-down industrial wasteland to get ot he hotel. $10 to activate the phone. Very rude staff at the front desk, over priced drinks in the bar. The next morning I opened the curtains to see a large parking lot and beyond that a 20 ft high fencewith razor wire on top, and beyond the fence a prison. Rude people shoving into the check in/ security lines back at the airport. New Jersey exceeded my expectations. Haven't seen the rest of the state though :)

17. Thems fighting words, people!
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 02:49 PM by tjdee
There are a LOT of people here, it is very crowded....but...
Both our senators and our governor are Democrats, and we have voted Democratic for president for at least 12 years consecutively. Many of our Republicans are in fact conservative Democrats.

Plus, we're close to New York City, the center of the universe.

From where I sit, NJ ain't so bad.

In fact, up north we even got cows. Cows are nice.

:-)

Also, I don't *have* an accent! I don't say "cawfee" or "Joisey" or anything, and neither does anyone I know. I'm constantly mystified at how people always come up to me like "New Joisey, hahaha"...I'm always like, what the f*** are you talking about? Everyone who talks funny in New Jersey is probably from New York ;-) .

20. Famous People From New Jersey
Grover Cleveland
Frank Sinatra
Connie Francis
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
The Shirrelles ("Will You Stilll Love Me Tomorrow")
Lou Costello
Bruce Springsteen
The Happenings ("See You In September")
Alfred Vail (helped Morse invent the telegraph)

Also, Thomas Edison did most of his most important work in Menlo Park and South Orange, NJ. The Seeing Eye trains guide dogs for the blind outside Morristown. And Thomas Nast drew many of his most famous drawings (including the ones that popularized the modern image on Santa Claus) while living in Morristown.

Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 02:54 PM by youngred
the land where the statewide pasttime involves duct tape, body bags and sleeping with fishes. Where the best thing to do is go to the Shore (come on its a beach for crissake, how cool can it be?). The blasted and stupid turnpike makes me wish to wretch with displeasure everytime I'm forced to use its confining confines. And what fucking dumbass decided it would be a good idea to name the rest stops after famous jerseyites? It's a fucking rest stop expensive gas, bad food, overpriced scholck and dirty bathrooms...and that's how you choose to honor the greatest residents of your state? The Garden state only if you count the pillbox gardens out people's windows and the accent is like fingernails on the chalkboard.

I could go on and on but I'll leave it at F*ck Jersey :P

because hardly anyone has seen anything but Newark Airport, the Turnpike, the Shore, and the malls. And Atlantic City.

They are all indefensible, but help keep those nasty strangers out, or at least in their place.

We hide the good stuff.

46. The good things about Both can't be found anywhere in NJ
Upstate - Garbage Plates, Proximity to Canada, Snow, Fall, Foliage, Apples and accompanying festivals, snow days, Abbots Ice Cream, and the Raging Rhinos

DC- Free Museums and galleries, Beautiful architecture (as well as some ugly stuff), more temperate climate, Metro, vibrant night life, and is the center of things (which Jersey isn't in anything other than Hockey every once in awhile).

If you could only cut the Cape May part of the state away from the trulay urban areas, you might have something worth keeping.

I spent enough time there to know that I will never voluntarily reside in that state.

Since I know that the must be some good and rational people residing there, I won't pick on it too much.

22. Best boss I ever had was from NJ
I know absolutely zero about NJ and am unable to proffer a "sucks" or "blows" opinion, but the best boss I ever had was a proud native of that state. He was handsome, very charming, always pleasant, gregarious. But also very loud and not the sharpest tool in the shed. Is that the norm?

Now, don't get me wrong, there are some very pretty spots in NJ, but it seems like the whole state developed too fast. You have residences, and shopping malls, and little else in many parts. Oh, and vast colonies of old people, my grandfather included...
