on edit: I buried my son with this song. It just speaks of him and how he affected others around him.

That was 5 years ago. I just wanted to hear it tonight and speak the words with it. This song just rocks my soul.

...but some son of a bitch had to graft Kenny G over the original recording. And wouldn't you know, the Lite Rock radio station they play at work all day has the remix in its regular rotation.

12. My Hands Down Favorite Song

During Desert Storm, just after the liberation of Kuwait City we all realized we were going home - safe and sound and were proud of what we did. The unit I was with was ordered back to Saudi Arabia fairly quickly and a very large convoy was formed at the International Airport (parked and ready to roll south). Somehow, someway (till this day I do not know why or who), someone had set up an audio system that could be heard for what seemed miles. As we sat in our humvees, trucks, etc - all of a sudden (with no prior songs or warning that music would signal our departure) Satchmo's What a Wonderful World seemed to float across the world as we knew it. It was the most wonderful feeling. To this day this song has a special place in my heart. When I got back stateside I was playing What a Wonderful World on my stereo and my, then 2 year-old, daughter came toddling in and said 'that's the pretty song'....

25. Great song and performance.

A few years ago I went to see a middle school concert because my goddaughter was performing. This was one of the songs the chorus performed. Her father told me the music teacher had to tell the boys not to try to do the Armstrong version of the song. I could just imagine all these little kids trying to sing with a gravelly voice.

29. the odd thing about WAWW...

...is that most of the jazz musicians I know (and I have a lot of them as friends) do not like that song and do not like to play it. They think of it as being on a par with "Bill Bailey won't you please come home." I guess, probably, because they get so many requests for it and it is a simple melody with little challenge or chord changes.

We like it, but a lot of them don't.

Pops, you know, is considered to have sold out for part of his career. Gone commercial, as they say. The whole Hello Dolly period of his career offends some musicians, as they consider his unmatchable cutting edge talent and genius.

I do consider it a happy song, believe it or not.

Armstrong survived some hard knocks and that only makes this song the more special. It's about the simple things in life and just sitting back and smelling the roses. Or tghe coffee, or whatever, it's a beautiful song.

Believe it or not, the most moving rendition of this song I ever heard was by Rolf on the "Muppet Show". He was singing it to a REAL puppy, not a muppy. It was adorable. He changed the word "babies" to "puppies". Real sobber. And a big, tough guy like me, too....... :-)

A few years ago. It was at night and I was surrounded by thousands of people ofall races and ages. Beautiful, warm night. And the local musician (Marcus Belgrave who used to play trumpet with Ray Charles) sounds just like Satchmo. Very moving experience. I always think of that night when I hear that song.
