Vasovagal reactions and random syncope SUCK!
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 04:20 AM by AlienGirl
They suck even worse if they happem at work! I made the mistake of letting myself get really hungry and shakey at work today, and then I dropped a phone, bent down to pick it up...and...THUD! I blacked out too quickly to notice it was happening, so I fell pretty hard.

Next thing I know, the nice EMTs were looking worried at me and I was having to explain that really, it was no big deal and I'd be fine once the Glucotabs caught up with me.

D'oh. I hope I'm not in trouble for scaring customers. I did, however, finish out my shift, so yay for me...

1. They Ain't Random When Your BP is 85/40
As mine is. I know better than to *ever* stand up quickly unless I want to go back down even quicker.

I'm diabetic, and when severely hypoglycemic, it can feel like the floor's dropped from under my feet. Startling when that happens.

2. Mine was 110/60 when they got there...
But 95/50 isn't uncommon for me, and last summer, when I'd lost all that weight, normal was about 80/40. I tend to have hypoglycemia, but no doctor has ever said it was a problem--I just need to remember to eat often.

3. Wow!
Mine's never been that high, except while in extreme pain. I know 110/60 is a perfectly nomal reading and my doctor would be delighted to get a normal reading from me, but sheesh!

Low BP is a good thing for me to have, since I have advanced kidney disease (so much for kidney disease being associated with high BP - but then again, my most serious kidney disease is usually found in black men) but it kind sucks being tired and having a headache all the time .

4. This happened to me a few months ago
I was dehydrated (which is odd because I usually drink water all day but I hadn't this day) and had what they called vasovagal syncope. I fainted. It wasn't low Blood Sugar - that was normal. Scary thing though.

Glad you're ok.

6. There's a new maneuver out,
sorry I don't have a ref, but what you do if you're standing and getting that feeling, other than lying down, is to cross your legs (yes, while standing) and tighten all muscles below your waist. Give it a shot, can't hurt, eh?

7. I'll try to remember that next time
Thanks.

I hope there is no "next time" though.
