heard back from my boss on the apartment I looked at
He said that it was alright. THe furniture was old but didn't smell...buyt it is quite close to the highway right where trucks are slowing down. And you could definatley hear them.

He also said I was bang on in my guess of the landlord..he's old ...and an alcoholic! In fact someone told him he the area's notorius drunk.

I used to live underneath a guy in NB who was a drunk, he always came down to my door with no shirt and holding a couple beers..then I'd get to hear prison stories against my will.

What do you guys think, fireplace, good appliances, furnished with old but not stinky furniture. $400 including heat and cable.....but only problem is it's close to the highway. My boss said "if it was me I wouldn't want it" but he was refering mostly to the highway thing.......hmmmmmm

1. My guess is: if you're asking, you know the answer.
I'd go with your boss. I would not want a "notorious drunk" for a landlord. Plus highway noise is not pleasant.

I'd keep looking. But that's just me. I'd rather pay a little more for better atmosphere.

2. You will get used to the highway ...
I currently live 20 ft from RR tracks. No shit our property is 20ft from live tracks. My parents still live about 4 miles from the end of the major runway (direct line).

You will get used to it. You may want to check out the quality of the windows in the place. When we got new storm windows in our house, there was a noticible decrease in train noise.

Good luck

Cheers
Drifter

18. Same here about the RR tracks.
I actually like the sound of trains in the night. Doesn't bother me at all. You'll get used to the highway noise.

Drunken landlord? Depends.... As long as he's not a nasty loud drunk, it shouldn't be a problem. If he's "notorious" you might want to find out why people think that before deciding. Does he live right there on the premises?

Everything else sounds like a killer deal, though. If you don't like the furniture, you can replace it gradually as you can afford it. I'm sure the landlord will store the old (not smelly) stuff somewhere if you want to move your own stuff in.

Good luck, my fine Canuck. Sounds like you're on your way.

3. Look again
It sounds okay with that fire place but with trucks keeping you awake and the drunk landlord...who knows what stories you'll hear. Why would your boss look at it anyway? He'll know where you live should you call in sick and come looking for you.

4. My first apartment when I moved out of the nest...
was about 150 feet from a rairoad track that had trains going through nightly. It woke me up the first night. After that, it just became background noise for me, and I really never heard it again that I ever remember.

If you don't need those windows open nearest the highway ( for ventilation purposes), it probably should be OK. But as I type this, I am a thousand or so miles away...

So take that for what it's worth...

5. a consideration
I once rented a house from a drunk, and he was incapable of fixing anything. If you know how to keep things in decent repair yourself, it's probably OK. However, my alcoholic landlord lived miles away and was generally too drunk to drive, which meant I never had to see him -- I just mailed the check each month. If the landlord is living close by and could become a nuisance hanging around and wanting a drinking buddy or wherever, I'd say it wouldn't be worth it at any price. This rental was near an interstate and after a few nights I no longer noticed the vehicles going by all night. However, if the trucks are backing up and making that beeping noise...forget it. You can't sleep through that and if you did learn to sleep through an alarm-like sound, it probably wouldn't be wise anyway.

6. It all depends on how long
the lease is for. If the lease is a short term lease I'd go for it because I could always use the time to find me a place I really liked.

9. yeah I think I will.......
only because it has a 14 foot vaulted ceiling and the fireplace. I was brought up in a fire crazy family. So I want the fireplace.

And as others said I can always leave right?

Thanks for the advice folks!

8. See if you can get a month to month deal
You will find out soon enough if you made the right choice - that rental price is unbelievably good.

If the landlord is both an alkie AND a smoker - be sure to have escape ladder/plenty of alarms.

Good luck

12. Give it a go!
If it were me, I'd be all over it. It's cheap - you have FIREPLACE!!!! - and the highway noise you'll grow accustomed to.

And an alcoholic landlord? What could be better - he's not gonna bother about stuff. Might be tough to get stuff fixed, but you never know - he might be really quick about it.

And if you get there and you don't like it, at least you have a place that's cheap taht will serve as a home base while you spend a lot of time looking for the perfect place.

16. Sounds good, HH...

I lived a stone's throw away from a big-city boulevard for more than four years, and I did grow accustomed to it. I'd say that the sound of the trucks will fade into the background; they may not even run as often at night or on weekends.

Other than that, it sounds like a good place. If you really like it, maybe the owners will let you make some minor modifications to spruce it up a bit if you're so inclined. And, if once you get there it proves to be substandard for your needs, you'll be in a better spot to look for another place when you're able.

But watch out for the landlord -- he's probably hoping to rope in a tippling buddy!

:toast:

edit: typos!
