When I was a kid growing up in the Fifties and Sixties, I recall respecting those who were smart. Teachers, scientists, and doctors were all looked up to. Learning how to learn and learning for the joy of learning was stressed. Developing compassion for others and a sense of social justice was lauded. On a national level, we worked hard to form coeltions to help keep peace in the world, and to try and stop nuclear proliferation.
And now, some fifty odd years later, I see people who are anti-intellectual. They revel in the fact that they are ignorant of some basic things, such as spelling simple words correctly. My own boss couldn't tell me the difference between a square and a rectangle-and this is information needed in his business! Learning is for taking a test, and has no relationship with reality. On a national level, we have a near-moron in the White House who is known and celebrated for swagger, false bravado, and doing his best to scare the bejesus out of the rest of the world.
I thought maybe the shift happened because I no longer live in a Northern College town. I'm hoping it is something restricted to small southern cities. Can anyone let me know if I'm right? I sure hope I am, or otherwise the world is in danger of being annihilated.
