"Tune in, turn on, drop out."
Who said it?
Approximately when?
What does it mean?

3. Tim Leary I believe
in the 60's...sometime

He was a psychologist who advocated LSD to promote religious or spiritual revalations and awakening.

4. Timothy Leary
maybe '66 or so... It means screw the establishment, join the psychedelic revolution, get high as a kite on acid and find meaning within. Or something like that.

6. Y'all are too good.
and I got it a little wrong.

"Six words: drop out, turn on, then come back and tune it in... and then drop out again, and turn on, and tune it back in... it's a rhythm... most of us think God made this universe in nature-subject object-predicate sentences... turn on, tune in, drop out... period, end of paragraph. Turn the page... it's all a rhythm... it's all a beat. You turn on, you find it inside, and then you have to come back (since you can't stay high all the time) and you have to build a better model. But don't get caught - don't get hooked - don't get attracted by the thing you're building, cause... you gotta drop out again. It's a cycle. Turn on, tune in, drop out. Keep it going, keep it going... the nervous system works that way... gotta keep it flowing, keep it flowing..."

7. tim was ok
When asked by the magazine to explain the meaning of the phrase he responded, " ‘Turn on’ means to contact the ancient energies and wisdoms that are built into your nervous system. They provide unspeakable pleasure and revelation. ‘Tune in’ means to harness and communicate these new perspectives in a harmonious dance with the external world. ‘Drop out’ means to detach yourself from the tribal game." (Marwick 312). This was not the first time his methods were questioned.

i find it disheartening when people just dismiss him as a druggie crazy person. try reading some of his essays/books. he had a lot to offer.

10. Read "Neuropolitics"
Truly one of the most profound books I've ever read...he wrote it in the early eighties...(and through the 70's). The best explanation of evolution of the mind ever...

9. Timothy Leary, April 1966
Counterculture Guru and Psychologist - he advised the nation to tune in to themselves and what was going on, get high, or trip (experimented heavily w/ LSD and other hallucinogens, which he beleived enabled one to have intense psychological awareness) and to drop out of traditional society.

Richard Nixon once called him the most dangerous man in America!

We could use another Timothy Leary about now.
