Monkees DVD season II
I just got my box set of the Monkees season 2 and although I already have season 1, I am laughing my ass off. Am I the only one who thinks this stuff is funny as hell? Plus to see Zappa on one and Tim Buckely on another episode, I think this stuff is great... Is my humor level that low, or am I not alone?

1. You are not alone...I loved them....
I remember watching the Monkees every Saturday morning growing up in the 70's. I didn't know they were on DVD yet. I just might have to ask Santa for the Monkee's DVD this Christmas. :-)

2. That's where I first saw them
Sat mornings...My parents still have a letter I wrote to Santa that says I wanted a bass to be like Peter Tork..lol. It is strange that no one here seems to want to comment. They have all these "music" posts, and these guys did a lot for pop music. Not only that, they turned television on it's head in the mid to late 60's. Mike Nesmith is a unbelievable artist, and this TV show was funny and dealt with a lot of the pop culture that many people take for granted these days.
BTW, they have all the episodes out on DVD, with commentary by the group and directors. It is thru Rhino records.

3. Season 2 is the better season, how's the 33 1/3 special lookin'?
Season 1 had a few good episodes, but season 2 wasn't nearly as manufactured. It's a lot more 'hip' as well, and they got rid of that damn laugh track.

As I recall, the 33 1/3 special, from 1969... the master was destroyed, and the version on the DVD (or columbia house's vhs release) is a compilation of two lesser-quality versions (combining the best video and audio quality.) Pity the masters were destroyed, as that special is pretty cool. Weird, but cool. "Head" was the best stuff they had ever done, but 33 1/3 did have its cool moments.

4. 33 1/3
The best part is to see Brian Augar, on top of Jerry Lee lewis' piano on top of Little Richards piano on top of Fats Dominos piano. It has it's moments but very hard to watch.
Jerry Lee rocks on that show. The video and sound is pretty bad. It cuts in and out. The best part about both of these sets is to listen to the commentaries. Nesmith cracks me up. At the end of the 33 1/3 has a lot of pretty good bands at the time playing Listen to the band.

6. Monkees fan by Proxy
When Nickelodean ran all their episodes in 1986, Marie taped them religiously. I have all their episodes, except the special 33-1/3 on VHS. They're the full length shows, no cuts in them. I was going to get the DVDs for Marie...but things didn't work out.

For her birthday, I did watch two of the tapes - and I still think the scene for "Sweet Young Thing" is one of their best :-)

7. I LOVE the Monkees...
I posted a Monkees thread a couple of months ago and there are some fans of the boys here in DU land.

I haven't yet gotten my second season box set but am looking forward to it when I do.

Have you watched 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee yet? I have it on video but it's very poor quality. I cannot wait to see that.

Fave Monkees...Micky and Peter!!!

9. It's the first thing watched...
It was ok..I liked a lot of it, but I was disappointed. There are some key moments, but it isnt what I thought it would be. You can tell it was salvaged from whatever they could find. The sound cuts out and some of it is pretty bad.
I'm sorry I missed the old posts..I just got this dvd set yesterday. I have had the older set for about a year.

10. I understand that was Peter's "Last Stand"
He got so frustrated that he quit after that show. Is it true?

11. In the eighties I belonged to a bible study group
I was 'challenged' by our group leader to pray in the morning. For a while I got up a little earlier (6 a.m.) and prayed. Then I found out Monkees reruns were on during that time. That was the end of that.
