Help- worms in puppy's?(not for the faint of heart)
One of my 7 week old pups has worms- he vommited and had worms near 2-3 inches long. I gave him some worming drugs and he has passed near 20 of the worms. He is sleeping soundly now. Is this something to be concerned about? He has been medicated and is passing the worms but I am concerned. (never had to deal with this) Any advice or knowledge to ease my mind? Thanks in advance!

2. Your puppy will be fine
Worms are routine.

The medicine will fix it.

Many happy years ahead. Enjoy!

3. Thanks Maple!
First time at this! He is a cute little guy. I have three new pups in all (rescued the pregnant Mom) and I have no clue as to what is routine. I am trying to do all I can do for the dogs.

7. Worms aren't routine!
Yes, dogs may get them, but you have to aggressively treat them to get rid of it.

And you HAVE to get rid of worms, because they are not only cross-canine infectious, but can also pass to humans.

Treat this aggressively and treat ALL the animals in your care.

4. yes, call your veterinarian.
Bring a stool sample and make sure that there are no other parasites causing problems. Roundworms are routine, but make sure there aren't any other critters present. And by the way,if your pup is 7 weeks old, it's time to start vaccinations!

5. vaccinations
I am giving them shots as needed, we have a farmers co-op that has all but the rabies shots. Rest assured, I will take care of them.

6. You are aware that these worms (most likely roundworms) are...
contagious and spread from dog to dog. Most likely, the mother is also infected, and these worms can pass to the pups through breastmilk.

You need to aggressively treat all of the animals and the environment. Roundworms and hookworms can live in the soil, so just because you worm them doesn't mean that you can rid the environment of them.

They are passed through fecal matter, which accumulates in the environment. If you have them inside, be sure to disinfect wherever the dogs are staying. If outside on earth, you may need to move the kennel area.

Also, beware of tapeworms. You have to visit a vet if your dogs develop tapeworms--there is no over-the-counter medication for tapeworm eradication.

The bottom line: Treat all dogs, and treat their environment or you will be plagued with this eternally. And start the dogs on heartworm meds when they are several months old.
