12. Terribly clever and cute
but Goldstein was fictional. Saddam Husseein was quite real, and over the years was competative with Pol Pot in wholesale murder.

Justice has caught up with Saddam. If Dean , Clark, and so many others can acknowledge this without sarcasm or smarmy remarks, why can't we ?

14. How can you say such terrible things about a ruthless dictator
who was such a staunch ally and friend of Reagan and Bush I, and attacked Iran when we told him to do so, and sold us oil during the embargo of 1973 when those other awful Arabs wouldn't do so

as soon as we dragged this incoherent old man out of his bricked-in hole, every lie and dead civilian required to get to that point was instantly justified. party on.

19. He was not in league with Pol Pot
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 12:58 PM by RPG-7
Not the same ballpark, not the same game. The Khmer Rhouge had a limited life span until the Cambodians were rescued by the Vietnamse while we backed Pol Pot.

A bunch of talking heads throw around "millions" killed by Saddam. What they don't tell you is that one million is likely a serious stretch and that it stretchs over 25 years and includes both Iranian and Iraqi troops killed in that war and troops killed in DS1. That alone makes up most of his body count. However even if you leave these figures in and say he killed a million people in 25 years you still wind up with less people dying per day than under Bush's rule. However bad Saddam was, no matter how you stretch it, Bush is worse.

22. Don't forget
Those millions killed also include the million who died under the sanctions of the last decade. Most of whom died of water-borne diseases which could have been prevented with a bit of chlorine. But the US wouldn't allow that dangerous chemical in the country. For our friends who want to blather about palaces while people died: They didn't die from lack of money; they didn't die from lack of food. They died from dirty water, and the US, by plan, destroyed that infrastructure in BushWarI, and prevented rebuilding of it after.

By the way. It sure is nice that we've found this room in Prole Town where we can talk freely. No telescreen or anything.

Cool, huh?

20. Two reasons : Presidential candidates have to play nice, and we all know..
.......the capture of a tinpot dictator we propped up for over 25 years after bombing the living crap out of a virtual non-threat is a complete sham.

Dean, Clark and Kerry (the frontrunners)have to play nice, but even they know that capturing one pathetic tyrant in a bomb shelter doesn't justify an illegal and unjust war, it doesn't bring Osama bin Laden to justice, and it doesn't cover up the fact that Bush has been lining the pockets of Dick Cheney and his Haliburton buddies at the expense of US soldiers and Iraqi civilians.

And as a last note, who the fuck thinks the Bush clan will allow Hussien to even talk? This guy has been a hired strong man for US imperialist since the Ford Administration. His antics were kicked into high gear after 12 years of Reagan/Bush the Better. If Saddam were allowed before a non-partisan international tribunal to tell all of his dirty little secrets, most of the Bushistas would be brought before a firing squad.

This is the ultimate shell game, capturing a disposed, disliked and throughly evil dictator and prop him up as the justification of a billions of wasted US resources, an illegal war, and a scam that is making Bush's contributors rich beyond their wildest dreams.

29. Loved that book!
He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self−willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin−scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. -last paragraph of 1984

I thought the ending was a little depressing and anticlimatic actually
but other that 1984 has be in my top two or three books.
