that seems to arise from the unknowing and historically ignorant American fundie Xtian masses every Xmas season?

What don't they know? Well, as one poster pointed out, X is the Greek letter for "Chi." And in that Greek tradition, the letter "X" has been used as a shorthand to signify The Christ, hence, Xmas. Yep, that Greek X has been found on the walls of caves etc dating from time immemorial. But when your sense of history only extends as far back as the date Rush Limbaugh first aired his show or Jimmy Swaggert porked his first prostitute, you wouldn't know that.
