14. back in the Gloria days

I was notoriously limited in my music listening (ala pop40). Out grew it - but am scarred, I tell you, from those days. Only recall one... so who knew! (Seriously I knew that she must have sang more than one song... I mean, to even do a one hit wonder back in the day of 45s there had to be a second side..., but in terms of work that anyone has heard of... )

16. Laura Branigan and the Billboard charts:

"Gloria" reached #2 for three weeks in 1982

"Solitaire" reached #7 in 1983

"How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" reached #12 in 1983 (long before Michael Bolton)

"Self Control" reached #4 in 1984

"The Lucky One" reached #20 in 1984 (a song I actually liked)

"Power of Love" reached #26 in 1987 (her last Top 40 hit)

Whatever you think of her music (and I don't care too much for it), this was a pretty decent showing for a pop singer.

and it matches my march away from top 40 - and hence my ignorance. I think I first discovered Squeeze in about 1982 and from their a slew of other alternative/progressive bands ... and sorta lost touch with the mtv/big songs thing. Beyond Gloria, none of those titles rings a bell. But your point is well taken - that does look like a good pop career run.

18. My history is similar to yours. I found Squeeze in 1982 and went off

to work in college radio in 1985, so drifted away from Top 40 radio, but I usually am aware of everything that is going on everywhere at least a little bit.

To tell the truth, I usually like the minor hits better. Sheena Easton's career is similar to Laura's except that Sheena managed a couple of more career comebacks, thanks in part to Prince.

Minor hits for Sheena after "Morning Train" include "You Could Have Been With Me," "When He Shines," "Almost Over You," and others. It is always fun to make mixes for friends of the minor hits and they go: "I REMEMBER THAT SONG! I had forgotten all about it!"

Mainstream radio is completely different now, of course, thanks to the Clear Channel-type corruption, the Internet, and even the charts are irrelevent now.

The pair of those songs pointed out the changing situation, the love and nostalgia for what radio had been and a warning about what it was becoming. Although, technically, Elvis was specifically talking about the British radio situation. (BBC Radio, etc.)
